          Jun. 07, 2024

PETER HELCK (1893-1988) CHEVY 3100 ILLUSTRATION ART

          Est: $5,000 - $7,000

Clarence Peter Helck (1893-1988) Chevrolet 3100 Series at Work Circa 1950. This vibrant and charming work of original illustration art in tempera on paper is signed lower right front by the legendary automotive illustration artist Peter Helck. The dynamic composition and the attention to detail, classic hallmarks of Peter Helck's work, are executed at a higher level here than in any other examples of the artist's known body of illustration art. The vivid composition features a mid 20th century Chevy Advance Design 3100 pick-up truck filled with milk cans climbing a hill near the sunny dairy barnyard where other Chevy models come into view, and family members go about their chores. Men work to unload other Chevy models while a youth in blue shirt and cap brings dairy cows in from pasture with the help of a dog. Blue skies and a rolling agrarian landscape are prominent in the distance. Peter Helck was an award-winning artist quite well-known for painting advertising illustrations like this, and re-creating moments in auto racing history using paint and watercolor. He has been honored with the title of The Dean of Automotive Illustration Art and an award in his name is still given annually to artists recognized as leaders in the field of automotive art. Whether or not this image was ever published has not yet been established. Sight size measures 21.5 x 22 sight size, with a framed size of 30.5 x 31.25 inches. Without proof of exemption, be aware that internet sales tax applies to all Internet transactions and local sales tax may apply to local pick-up transactions. We happily provide seamless in-house packing and shipping services on nearly everything we sell. Until further notice, we cannot offer international shipping in-house.

An illustrator and painter of industrial genre, Peter Helck depicted mining scenes, foundries, and dramatic moments in historic automobile races. He was especially known for his love of automobiles, an interest that began when he was a child and saw racing competition. Eventually he became friends with many of the drivers and developed familiarity with their cars. As an illustrator, his technique was to produce highly detailed sketches before the finished painting. Helck studied at the Art Students League of New York and studied privately with Frank Brangwyn in England. He has illustrated for most well-known national magazines and had commissions from prominent automotive companies including Chevrolet and Mack Trucks. From 1920 to 1940, he painted abroad extensively and subsequently had numerous exhibits of his fine art in the East and Midwest. But he was most successful as an illustrator, and many of his fans are collectors of rare cars and automotive art.

AN IMPORTANT PETER HELCK PAINTING FOR NEW YORK CENTRAL

          Est: $3,000 - $5,000

Peter Helck (1893-1988) New York Central Locomotive #6000 1945 The original tempera and gouache painting executed on artist's board, a commissioned illustration for the New York Central Railroad. The commission is discussed and this work portrayed in How I Make a Picture, written by Peter Helck and published by The Famous Artist's School, an art school founded by Peter Helck, Norman Rockwell and other members of the New York Society of Illustrators. The subject, New York Central Railroad Niagara #6000, is depicted as Commodore Vanderbilt Express from Chicago, southbound to Grand Central Terminal on the Hudson River East Shore Mainline approximately sixty miles north of New York City. The work is signed by the artist on the lower right and dated 45. Peter Helck was an important and prolific illustrator who, it is estimated, produced more than 600 sketches, drawings and paintings during his career. He was best known as a painter of cars, trucks, locomotives and industrial genre. He was privately tutored by the important British artist and illustrator Sir Frank William Brangwyn and at the Art Students League of New York. 'As a small boy living in New York City, he loved to stand by the tracks at 96th Street and watch the steam trains rumble down into the long tunnel toward Grand Central Station. He began to draw at the age of five, and soon was producing remarkably detailed renderings of all types of locomotives.' He is best known for his connection to auto racing and made a good living with repeat illustration commissions from The New York Central, The Autocar Magazine, Brighton Beach Motordrome, Sheepshead Bay Speedway, Sinclair Oil Company, Esquire Magazine and many others. He wrote and illustrated numerous articles and books including The Checkered Flag and Great Auto Races. This work is fresh to the market, with fine provenance and smartly framed. Measures 30 x 39.75 inches. We happily provide seamless in-house packing and shipping services on nearly everything we sell.
