Painter, Photographer

Gottfried Helnwein (born 8 October 1948) is an Austrian-Irish visual artist. He has worked as a painter, draftsman, photographer, muralist, sculptor, installation and performance artist, using a wide variety of techniques and media.

His work is concerned primarily with psychological and sociological anxiety, historical issues and political topics. His subject matter is the human condition. The metaphor for his art is dominated by the image of the child, particularly the wounded child, scarred physically and emotionally from within.[1] His works often reference taboo and controversial issues from recent history, especially the Nazi rule and the horror of the Holocaust. As a result, his work is often considered provocative and controversial.

Helnwein studied at the University of Visual Art in Vienna (Akademie der Bildenden Künste, Wien). He lives and works in Ireland and Los Angeles.

Something that is otherwise difficult to achieve in the world – but in art, it is possible. Art is the only field where one can still take the path back to simplicity. Gottfried Helnwein

Gottfried Helnwein, Soldaten, signed colour lithograph from 1991 Gottfried Helnwein, * 1948 Vienna, Austrian-Irish artist, Soldaten, colour lithograph, 61 x 85 cm, signed, numbered 123/280, without frame About the artist: He became known above all for his hyperrealistic pictures of wounded and bandaged children. Throughout his oeuvre, he explores the themes of pain, injury and violence, also touching on taboo and controversial topics from recent history. In particular, the subject of National Socialism is also dealt with in his works; however, the depiction of the child is at the centre of his work. He attended the Höhere Graphische Bundes-Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt in Vienna from 1965 to 1969 and studied painting in the master class of Professor Rudolf Hausner at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna from 1969 to 1973.[2] During this time, he worked with a wide variety of techniques and stylistic devices. In addition to drawing, watercolour, acrylic and oil painting and various mixed techniques, photography is an essential medium for him - often in connection with performance works.

Fine Art Print signed lower right, numbered lower left: 8/150 sheet size: 23,7 x 27,6 in / plate size: 18,3 x 27,6 in “Peach Mouse“ by Helnwein represents the artists intention to alienate pop cultural shapes and motifs. An incessant hypernaturalism creates an ironic hyperbole that stands out to the viewer by invoking a sense of perturbation. Mickey Mouse reminds the artist of his childhood to which the figure brought some light into this otherwise dark and hopeless time in his life. Due to it representing a world in which Helnwein could feel safe, a world that seemed proper and comfortable, the figure became his main motif. “My work has always been an attempt to react to and deal with the things that affect me.” “This narrow world of small galleries that only exist for a knowledgeable audience has always been too constricted and too elitist for me. To the point where I said, no, in lieu with Pop Arts credo I want to go a step further. I want to be on the cover of magazines in every kiosk or bodega that would be a much better exhibition, when everyone lazily buying cigarettes has to look at my paintings, so that really everyone sees them.”

From 1965 to 1969, he attended the Höhere Graphische Bundes-Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt in Vienna. From 1969 to 1973, he studied painting in the master class of Professor Rudolf Hausner at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. During this time he worked with a wide variety of techniques and stylistic devices. In addition to drawing, watercolor, acrylic and oil painting and various mixed media, photography became an essential medium for him, often in connection with performance work. His first exhibitions in Vienna from 1970 repeatedly triggered protests, exhibitions were closed and works were confiscated by the police. He became best known for his hyper-realistic images of wounded and bandaged children. Throughout his work he deals with the themes of pain, injury and violence and also touches on taboo and irritating topics in recent history. The topic of National Socialism in particular is dealt with in his works; The focus of his work is, above all, the depiction of the child. In 1982, “Blackout”, an album by the Hanoverian rock band Scorpions, was released with a self-portrait of Helnwein on the cover. In 1985, the year of his first Albertina exhibition, Professor Rudolf Hausner suggested him as his successor to head the master class for painting. However, the majority of the professoriate rejected this proposal. At the end of 1985, Helnwein and his family moved to Germany, where he lived and worked in Burgbrohl Castle in the Eifel from 1985 to 1997. At the end of the 1980s he began to devote himself to installations in public spaces. In 1997 he moved to Ireland with his family and purchased the country house Castle Gurteen de la Poer, County Waterford. In 2002, Helnwein set up a studio in Los Angeles. Since then he has lived and worked alternately in Ireland and Los Angeles. In 2004 he received Irish citizenship. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights.
