Johanna Helmuth (b. 1992) As Strong as Ezrah's Heart signed and dated 2021 (lower right) oil on canvas 60" x 48" (152 cm x 122 cm) Accompanied by a certificate signed by the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot In this oil on canvas piece, we see a woman dressed in military fatigue, sitting on a typical swivel chair. Her face positioned slightly off to the side, while her eyes are seemingly fixed at a point beyond the viewer; alluding to her having a relatively distant disposition. This assumption is furthered by the fact that her shoes are seemingly mismatched, with her right foot adorning standard military-issued combat boots, while her left is fitted with something more indicative of everyday civilian wear. Though one can find humor in the work, a closer and more introspective look at the piece shows us how Helmuth has utilized her unique artistic practice to the realities of those enlisted in military service. Helmuth’s woman, although appearing to have a commanding visage, is visibly aloof or even distraught. One can only assume the mental exhaustion bubbling within the mind of the woman; a facet that is subtly but powerfully captured by Helmuth’s slightly off-kilter approach. (J.D.)

With her signature monochrome style, Johanna Helmuth introduces us to a world of perpetual frustration. Helmuth confronts viewers with frank depictions of domestic states of mind. Roughly hewn subjects populate her canvases, the coarse finish resulting from her use of a palette knife to apply paint. She describes the process of slathering pigment onto the canvas as cathartic. This austerity directs viewers to focus on the figure, the discord and drama evinced in her awkward poses. Helmuth’s art is the archaeology of urban experience transcending stereotypes—there are some very narrow views of what constitutes modern and contemporary art in the Philippines. From the world of everyday urban details that surround our lives, she recasts experiences of time and place. An unidentified city girl leans on a table. She conveys an air of ennui, of slight disenchantment with domestic existence. The girl’s eyes are almost closed, somewhat forlornly, her mind in deep but somewhat tentative thought.

        Johanna Helmuth - (b.1993) - Untitled

Johanna Helmuth (b.1993) Untitled signed and dated 2015 (lower left) oil on canvas With her signature monochrome style, Johanna Helmuth introduces us to a world of perpetual frustration. Admittedly, Kiefer, with his monumental ruminations on identity, and Rego’s bold, unflinching illustrations, exert more of an influence these days. In contrast, the imagery that springs from her brushes is strong, stark, and clearly drawn. Roughly hewn subjects populate Helmuth’s canvases, the coarse finish resulting from her use of a palette knife to apply paint. They exist in a monochrome universe, set against backdrops devoid of details. This austerity directs viewers to focus on the figures, the discord and drama evinced in their awkward poses. There is an undercurrent of deviancy running across her paintings, especially on the tableaux presented in the six larger works. She paints to speak of personal experiences; she makes no pretenses to any grand statements. Helmuth’s purview is limited to her circle of family, friends, and acquaintances, the goings-on in her world.

Johanna Helmuth (b.1993) Untitled signed and dated 2014 (lower right) oil on canvas 24” x 36” (61 cm x 91 cm) Archaeology of urban experience transcending stereotypes — There are some very narrow views of what constitutes modern and contemporary art in the Philippines. Yet contemporary artists such as Johanna Helmuth move outside and beyond the box. From the world of everyday urban details that surround our lives, Johanna Helmuth recasts experiences of time and place. An unidentified city girl sits or rather crouches on a chair next to a nondescript dining table. Through her works Helmuth reaches beyond the singular, individual experience to one that embraces a gritty urban awareness of life and change that touches all of us.

        Johanna Helmuth (b.1993) Untitled

        Est: ₱40,000 - ₱52,000

Johanna Helmuth (b.1993) Untitled signed and dated 2014 (lower right) oil on canvas 14” x 18” (36 cm x 46 cm) Known for her rough-hewn technique, in which paint is applied by a palette knife and not a brush, Johanna Helmuth captures the familial drama of everyday life. In this work, the domestic scene is occupied not by her usual characters but by a dresser. Situated in the center of a room and unaccompanied by other furniture, the dresser generates attention all to itself, functioning as some kind of a still life. Has it been abandoned? Has it outlasted its use and value? The door that is slightly ajar possibly holds the clue. The scant details notwithstanding, this work of supreme delicacy is charged with narrative power, allowing the viewer to fill in the gaps with bits and pieces from his own life.
