Born in Prague to a carpenter father, Jirí Georges Hejna studied decorative art at Bata School of Art in Zlín from 1941 to 1945 and the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague under Max Švabinský. In 1946, he moved to Paris where he studied at the Naitonal School of Fine Arts and in the studio of Jean Souverbie. Hejna returned to Czechoslovakia in 1948, where he remained under communist rule until he left with his wife and brother for Paris. While stuck in Czechoslovakia, Hejna produced some his most famous series of works, the Cosmogonic Compositions, which showed in galleries in France, Switzerland and the United States. Hejna virtually stopped painting in 1989, and he passed away in 2011.
