This copper engraving depicts the battle of St. Jakob an der Birs on August 26, 1444 between the Old Swiss Confederacy and mostly French mercenaries under the leadership of Louis Dauphin (later King Louis XI). The fierce battle, part of the Old Zurich War, saw a small force of 1,200 Swiss soldiers valiantly fight against a much larger French force of 80,000. While the smaller Swiss force was completely eliminated, the heavy casualties that the Swiss inflicted (8,000) convinced the Dauphin to return home instead of proceeding to Zurich, a decision that contributed to an eventual Swiss victory in the war. Accompanied by two panels of German text describing the action. On a sheet measuring 24.6 x 20.6".

          Homann - Map of Asia

          Est: $1,000 - $2,000

This engraving is from a composite atlas presented by the Homann Heirs. Many of the maps in the collection were completed by J. B. Homann, Homann Erben, M. Seutter, and T. C. Lotter. The maps were originally published from 1700-1800s in Amsterdam and Nuremberg by the Homann Heirs. Following the decline of the great Dutch publishers, the Homann family became one of the most important map publishing houses in Germany. Founded in Nuremberg by Johann Baptist Homann in 1702, the Homann empire dominated Germany's map market for over a century. Homann published his first major atlas in 1707 and was soon after appointed Geographer to the Emperor. After Homann's death in 1724, the firm was continued by his son until 1730. The business was then bequeathed to his heirs with the stipulation that it conducted business under the name of Homann Heirs. The Homann family continued to produce maps until the beginning of the nineteenth century, and remained one of the most important German publishers on the Continent. They published a Neuer Atlas in 1714, a Grosser Atlas in 1737 and an Atlas Maior in 1780. In addition they issued an atlas of German town plans, numerous school atlases, and an atlas of 20 maps of Silesia. Their excellent work had a lasting impact on European maps during the eighteenth century.

Portobelo, Panama. Homann Heirs, Portus Pulchri, in Isthmo Panamensi Siti Accurata Ichnographia... [on sheet with] Scenographia Portus Pulchri..., 1743 (circa). Hand Color. This uncommon sheet depicts the Battle of Porto Bello (or Portobelo), a conflict between Britain and Spain during the War of Jenkins' Ear, part of the War of the Austrian Succession. Portobelo was a strategic Spanish transfer point for gold and silver coming from South America. After taking part in a failed attempt to capture a fully laden Spanish treasure ship departing from Portobelo in 1727, Vice Admiral Edward Vernon made claims that he could capture the historic port with just six ships. In November 1739, Vernon organized a squadron of six ships to capture the settlement. Due to strong easterly winds, Vernon was initially forced to focus his efforts on the harbor fort (here labeled Irou Castell). The British caught the Spanish off guard and quickly gained control, forcing the Spanish to surrender the fort. Subsequently, Vernon shifted his efforts to the town of Portobelo, resulting in Spanish surrender of the port. The capture of Portobelo was seen as a big triumph in Britain and America, and the names Portobelo and Vernon were used in commemoration (including Portobelo Road in London, the Portobelo district of Edinburgh, and Mount Vernon in Virginia, the home of George Washington). The British occupied Portobelo for only three weeks, destroying the fortress and key buildings before withdrawing. This sheet includes both a bird's-eye plan and a perspective view of the battle. The plan was based on a larger chart drawn by Lieutenant Philip Durell and brought back to England by Captain James Rentone. Durell made several other maps of the Caribbean region during the war, all of which are rare. It locates Irou Castell on the point, engulfed in smoke, with British warships firing upon the fort. The town of Portobelo is presented in a simple block pattern, with the fortified Castell Gloria adjacent to the town, and Spanish ships guarding the nearby waters. The surrounding countryside is filled with hills and vegetation. A compass rose in the center of the bay orients north to the bottom left of the chart, and the bay is filled with notations of depth soundings, rocks, and shoals. A lettered key identifies the ships and key locations throughout the chart. The map is dedicated to Sir Charles Wager, who was First Lord of the Admiralty between 1733 and 1742 and was partially responsible for appointing Vernon to command the Jamaica Station. Published by the Homann Heirs circa 1743.

Homann - Map of Paris, France

          Est: $800 - $1,600

This engraving is from a composite atlas presented by the Homann Heirs. Many of the maps in the collection were completed by Peter Schenk or J. B. Homann. The maps were originally published from 1710 to the mid 1800s in Amsterdam and Nuremberg by the Homann Heirs.
