STEVE HEINEMANN (1957 - ), R.C.A. DIVIDED FLORALS ceramic, 14" x 25.5" x 20" -- 35.6 x 64.8 x 50.8 cm., unsigned Provenance: Galerie Elena Lee, Montreal, QC Note: STEVE HEINEMANN (1957 - ), R.C.A. "Why ceramics? I have come to recognize that clay, as an organic material with a long history of human use, can offer a substantial link to both the natural and cultural worlds, to historical as well as geological time. So to me, the physical facts of soft/hard, surface/form, and inside/outside, suggest diverse opportunities for considering relationships among the seemingly disparate. Connections emerge, linking human activity and natural processes, deliberation and chance, past and present, and what is seen with what is sensed." - Steve Heinemann - Steven Heinemann was born in rural Ontario in 1957 to Hungarian parents. His creative interests took hold in high school, where he discovered clay and began what has become an intense involvement with the medium. While also active in painting and photography, Heinemann went on to study at the Sheridan College School of Craft and Design, where ceramics became his major focus. Upon completion of his studies there in 1979, he went on to receive his B.F.A. in Ceramics from Kansas City Art Institute in 1981(with a bursary from the Ontario Crafts Council), and his M.F.A. in Ceramics from New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University in 1983. Since his first solo exhibition at the Ontario Crafts Council in 1982, Heinemann has exhibited nationally and internationally and his work is represented in numerous public and private collections in Canada and abroad, including the National Museum of History, Taiwan; The Victoria and Albert Museum, London, England; The Museum Het Kruithuis, the Netherlands; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Claridge Collection, Montreal; the Canadian Museum of Civilization, Hull and the Canada Council Art Bank, Ottawa. Heinemann has taught and lectured throughout Canada, the United States, and Europe. In both 1988 and 1994, Heinemann received the Prix d'Excellence at the National Biennial of Ceramics. He is also a two-time recipient of the Merit Award at the Fletcher Challenge International in New Zealand. In 1995, Heinemann received the Judges Award at the Ceramic International in Mino, Japan and in 1996 the prestigious Saidye Bronfman Award for Excellence, Canada's highest recognition of achievement in contemporary craft. In 2001, he was invited into the Royal Canadian Academy of Art. Heinemann maintains a studio in Richmond Hill, Ontario.
