He left Budapest around 1928 and travelled extensively through Europe, the United States and Canada, painting and exhibiting during his travels. Heimlich settled in Montreal, Quebec, in 1930, where he established his first studio. That same year, he took part in his first Canadian exhibition, a show held by the Exhibitions Association of the City of St. John, New Brunswick, at which he was awarded first prize. Throughout his career, Heimlich divided his time between painting, drawing, and teaching. He was a member of the Faculty of the Department of Fine Arts at the Saidye Bronfman Centre for the Arts, and also taught at various community organizations and, along with Arthur Lismer, at schools under the Protestant School Board.Heimlich's paintings reflect his admiration for fauvism, cubism and other European art movements that stressed the elements of colour, line and composition. He was first and foremost a figurative artist, captivated by the physical structure and psychological makeup of people.   Heimlich also illustrated children's books and painted murals for public and private buildings in Canada and the United States. Heimlich's works were exhibited throughout his career, in both solo shows, held at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Galerie Agnes Lefort, and at the Y.W.H.A; and group exhibitions with the Royal Canadian Academy and at McGill University, the University of Montreal, and the Art Gallery of Hamilton. He became a member of the Federation of Canadian Artists in 1945. Heimlich passed away in 1986.Selected Corporate, Private and Public CollectionsArt Gallery of Ontario, Toronto, ONArt Gallery of Greater Victoria, BCCarleton University, Ottawa, ONClaridge Collection, Montreal, QCConcordia University, Montreal, QCUniversity of Toronto, ONWinnipeg Art Gallery, MBSelected Solo Exhibitions2004Portraits, McMichael Canadian Art CollectionPortraits, Carleton University, Ottawa, ON2001Meditations on Humanity, University of Toronto Art Gallery, ON2000Works on Paper, Galerie Jean-Pierre Valentin, Montreal, QC1995Works on Paper and on Canvas, Galerie Jean-Pierre Valentin, Montreal, QC1992Retrospective of Herman Heimlich Drawings,  Museé d'art de Joliette, QC          Montreal Museum of Fine Arts          Galerie Agnes Lefort, Montreal          Penthouse Gallery, Montreal          Saidye Bronfman Centre for the Arts, MontrealSelected Group Exhibitions2012Country Canada: Village, Farm, and Lake, D & E Lake, Ltd., Toronto, ON2010Jewish Painters of Montreal: Witnesses of Their Time: 1930-1948, McCord Museum, Montreal, QC2002Gifted: A Celebration of Generosity to the Hart House Permanent Collection, Justina M.
