Joseph Hecht (1891-1951) 'Study of a Deer, 1929'

          Est: $150 - $250

Polish/French. This is an original engraving by French artist Joseph Hecht (1891-1951). This study of a deer was created and printed circa 1929. It is hand signed in pencil, lower right, and also editioned as number 11. This engraving was printed on a blue toned laid type antique paper with a shield watermark. The image measures 6" x 9". Joseph Hecht, painter and printmaker was born on December 14, 1891 in Lodz, Poland. He studied at the Academie Beaux-Arts in Krakow between 1909 and 1914. Hecht traveled throughout Europe until the beginning of WW1 when he went to Norway where he would remain to render studies of the landscape in drypoint and engraving. After the war ended, Hecht left Norway for Italy, then on to Paris where he was granted membership to the Salon d'Automne, and thus to the burgeoning Parisian artistic community. He met Stanley William Hayter in 1926 and helped him print his first drypint. Hecht's meticulous attention to detail impressed Hayter and a lifelong friendship was formed. Hecht went on to publish his first portfolio of six prints in 1926, L'Arch de Noe, with a forward by Symbolist Gustave Kahn. He encouraged Hayter to open a cooperative printmaking studio, wich became Atelier 17. Hecht worked with Atelier 17 through the 1930's. As conditions in Europe became more difficult Hecht, who was Jewish, left Paris and spent the war years on the Italian Swiss border, working as a laborer (Annex Galleries).

Young of Charles M. Young Fine Prints & Drawings LLC This item ships from NY 11201 Hecht’s Seagulls engraving captures the essence of the natural world. The foreground features two birds, seemingly peacefully floating in water. The birds appear to be in communication with one another. Are they remarking on the tranquility of the scene or discussing whatever it is that they are gazing at in the distance? ,,Juxtaposed to the static floating birds, a third bird flies above, occupying the top of the composition. With its wings spread wide and beak pointed downward, the flying bird appears predatory. What initially presented itself as a peaceful, simple scene is complicated by the dynamic between the floating birds and the flying bird. ,,The background may either be a muddled pond for the birds to float on or a clouded sky for the third bird to soar through. This duality removes any sense of vertical perspective. While the flying bird is theoretically the most powerful figure in the scene, Hecht’s deconstruction of the artistic plane and conventional perspective techniques depicts the three birds as equals.,,~ Lucy Siegel, Student at Bowdoin College, Bachelor of Arts in Art History and Government and Legal Studies, Center for Art Law Summer 2020 Intern. Artist's Biography Joseph (Józef) Hecht (1891-1951) was a Polish artist who based his artistic career in Paris, France. Originally trained in printmaking at the Art Academy of Kraków, Hecht was known for founding Atelier 17 in Paris, now known as Atelier Contrepoint, which was an art school and studio with a particular influence in teaching and promoting printmaking throughout the 20th century. Hecht was a master printmaker, depicting only animals, and almost exclusively utilizing burin (pure-line engraving) or drypoint. ,,Hecht is renowned today for his ability to pare down his subject to its essence. Hecht drew most of his animals in captivity, specifically finding inspiration at the Jardin des Plantes in Paris. Hecht created more than 400 prints of nature and animals before his death in 1951.
