          Pierre-Eugene-Emile Hebert (French, 1828-1893). Bronze sculpture depicting the Greek sea goddess, Thetis, ca. 1890. She is shown with a shield, seated atop a column, fastening armor to her shins. Throughout the sculpture there is tremendous detail, including her intricately carved hairline and sprawling robe. There are also horses and scenes of battle represented along the borders of the shield. Signed along the base of the bronze.

Le groupe sculpté "Et toujours! Et jamais!", datée de 1863, connaît un grand succès et lui assure la notoriété suffisante pour recevoir de grandes commandes publiques. Il participera alors aux décorations des façades du Louvre au cours du projet de Napoléon III. Tout au long de sa création, il empruntera un registre très naturaliste dans une veine purement romantique avec une fascination pour le fantastique, voire le morbide. Ce combat à main nue, est marqué par le romantisme et la recherche du Sublime. En effet, le dynamisme et la violence traduite dans les lignes de tensions de ce bronze à patine brune, s’opposent à l’aspect poli et hiératique de la sculpture néoclassique et des chairs lisses et polies des Académistes. La musculature contractée des deux personnages, l’exagération des expressions des visages rappellent le pathétisme de l’effort des soldats au combat de la période de la Grèce hellénistique qu’Hébert explore tout au long de sa carrière.

Hébert explore l'Antiquité par le biais de voies nouvelles ouvertes par le Romantisme bien loin des préoccupations néo-classiques. Il choisit des thématiques lui permettant d'exploiter des sujets au potentiel fantastique et romantique fort. Il ne représente ainsi pas des femmes idéalisées à la manière d'un Canova, aux chairs lisses et à la sensualité toute suggestive, mais préfère sculpter des femmes à la beauté fatale, à l'érotisme plus latent comme dans son Assyrienne, figure féminine influencée par les vestiges assyriens arrivés au musée du Louvre. Nul doute que les découvertes archéologiques contemporaines aient pu l'influencer dans sa création. Le sculpteur nourrit ses créations de ces antiques images que le XIXesiècle exhume. Dans ce groupe en bronze, exposé au salon de 1874, le sculpteur choisit l'épisode de Bellérophon combattant la chimère. Le romantisme s'attache à ce thème mythologique, aussi bien en littérature que dans les beaux-arts, dont une représentation en mosaïque du IIesiècle ap. J.-C.fut exhumée en 1830 à Autun puis exposée en 1859 au musée du Louvre. De l'iconographie de cet épisode Hébert retient le dynamisme et l'envolée qu'il traduit par une composition en diagonale rendue par la ligne des bras de Bellérophon répondant à celle des jambes du cheval. Hébert choisit de ne pas figurer la chimère pour concentrer son attention sur les expressions du drame dont la tension est rendue par le visage de Bellérophon et la fougue de Pégase. Exemplaire des recherches plastiques menées par Hébert, ce Bellérophon chevauchant Pégase évoque tout à la fois l'influence du romantisme et le style néogrec dont Hébert s'est simultanément imprégné.           A NAPOLEON III GILT BRONZE AND WHITE MARBLE FIGURAL CLOCK CASE BY EMILE HEBERT (FRENCH, 1828-1893) the bronzes depicting a female Bacchante picking grapes from a large urn at the centre of the clock, with Cupid the other side, his quiver at his feet, raised on a rectangular plinth base over toupie feet, the white enamelled dial signed 'Hebert a Paris', with Arabic numerals and calendar indication, movement now replaced with a battery, 37cm high Pierre-Eugene-Emile Hebert studied under his father Pierre Hebert and later under the important Romantic sculptor Feuchere. He exhibited regularly at the Salon from 1846 to 1893.
