Attributed to Eric Hebborn - Head of a Man - pen and ink - bears signatures left and right

      Est: £200 - £300

Attributed to Eric Hebborn (British, 1934-1995) Head of a Man bears indecipherable signatures left and right pen and ink h:21 w: 16 cm The racy but skilful penwork, with Old-Masterish cross hatching fits the work of Hebborn, as does the light brown, rather bogus-looking stain in the bottom right and the insensitive sticking down of the sheet on to cardboard. The source here is Rubens. In 1977 the British Museum held an exhibition of Rubens's drawings, curated by John Rowlands, which included rather too prominently a series of illustrations of little profile portraits of Ancient Greek and Roman philosophers, and Roman Emperors (e.g. Nero), etc, all of them belonging to the Department of Coins and Medals. Several of these drawings have two or three identifying inscriptions in the artist's hand, and this may have caused Hebborn to inscribe two "signatures" on this drawing, although neither signature seems to make any sense. The one on the right seems to say "Leonardi". This illegibility of the inscriptions is another giveaway to the drawing being a pastiche.
