    Apr. 02, 2025

    K. K. HEBBAR (INDIA, 1911-1996)

    Est: £2,000 - £3,000

    K. K. HEBBAR (INDIA, 1911-1996) K. K. HEBBAR (INDIA, 1911-1996) 1948 watercolour Signed and dated 1948 in Devanagari under mount upper right of sheet 18.5cm x 34cm within mount 21cm x 41.5cm full sheet Framed and glazed Provenance: Private U.K. Collection Acquired by Henry John Harris, a Lieutenant Colonel in the British Army, who went on to become the managing director of Times of India in the 1940s/50s. Thence by descent. K.K. Hebbar, a pioneering figure in modern Indian art, is renowned for his evocative depictions of rural life and cultural traditions. Born in 1911 in Kattingeri, Karnataka, Hebbar's oeuvre reflects a harmonious blend of Western techniques and Indian themes. After studying at the Sir J.J. School of Art in Bombay, he furthered his artistic journey at the Académie Julian in Paris, which enriched his stylistic vocabulary. The present watercolour, painted in 1948, exemplifies Hebbar's affinity for capturing the essence of rural India. This work which has been part of a private collection since its acquisition was only recognised as a work by Hebbar recently when unframed for inspection. The composition portrays women engaged in daily chores amidst their livestock, rendered with fluid lines and a rhythmic quality that Hebbar often achieved through his studies in Kathak dance. This piece offers a poignant glimpse into the artist's perspective on agrarian life and his ability to infuse movement and emotion into everyday scenes. Hebbar's works from this period are characterized by their simplicity and depth, focusing on the dignity of common folk and their symbiotic relationship with nature. His art transcends mere representation, inviting viewers to engage with the cultural and emotional narratives embedded within each scene. This watercolour offers a rare and intimate portrayal of Hebbar's early exploration into the lives of rural women and their environment, making it a significant addition to any collection of modern Indian art.

    K. K. HEBBAR (INDIA, 1911-1996) K. K. HEBBAR (INDIA, 1911-1996) Watercolour on paper Signed and dated 1947 lower right 29.5 x 36.5cm within mount Framed and glazed Provenance: Private U.K. Collection Acquired by Henry John Harris, a Lieutenant Colonel in the British Army, who went on to become the managing director of Times of India in the 1940s/50s. Thence by descent. K.K. Hebbar (1911–1996) was a leading Indian modernist painter whose works have had a significant impact on the development of contemporary Indian art. Born in Kattingeri, a small town in Karnataka, India, Hebbar’s early life was shaped by the rural surroundings of his birthplace, which would go on to influence much of his artistic work. His formal education began at the prestigious Sir J.J. School of Art in Bombay (now Mumbai), where he studied under the guidance of eminent teachers, honing his skills in traditional art forms. Hebbar’s early exposure to the vibrant art scene of India was critical in shaping his vision as an artist. Following his studies in Bombay, Hebbar left for Paris in the early 1930s to further his artistic education. He enrolled at the renowned Académie Julian, where he was exposed to Western art movements such as Impressionism, Expressionism, and Post-Impressionism. This period in Paris allowed him to experiment with new techniques and styles, incorporating aspects of European modernism into his own evolving artistic language. Hebbar's unique synthesis of Western and Indian influences would become a hallmark of his style. Hebbar’s career gained momentum when he returned to India in the mid-1930s. He became involved with the Progressive Artists' Group in Bombay, a collective that sought to break away from traditional artistic conventions and promote a modern, internationalist style of painting. His early works featured bold, vibrant colors, and his subjects ranged from portraits to rural landscapes. However, it was Hebbar’s focus on the lives of ordinary people—especially rural women and their relationship with the land—that became a defining theme in his art. Hebbar's work is deeply rooted in Indian culture, and his paintings often depict rural life, labor, mythology, and spiritual symbolism. Throughout his career, he captured the daily rituals of rural communities, portraying them with dignity and reverence. His works often featured strong, stylized figures, characterised by dynamic compositions and an almost rhythmic quality in the portrayal of human figures in motion. One of the key moments in Hebbar’s career came when he was invited to exhibit his work internationally. In 1944, Hebbar exhibited his paintings in London at the prestigious Indian Art Gallery, where his works garnered attention from collectors and critics alike. His European training had given him a distinctive voice, blending Indian traditional art forms with Western modernist techniques. This international recognition helped to establish Hebbar as a leading figure in the Indian modernist movement. Throughout his career, Hebbar maintained a keen interest in traditional Indian themes. He was particularly fascinated by depictions of rural women, often portraying them as powerful, graceful figures engaged in labor or communal activities. Hebbar’s use of bold brushstrokes, vivid colors, and strong, stylized figures reflected the influence of his Parisian training, but his subjects were always deeply rooted in Indian life and spirituality.

KATTINJERI KRISHNA HEBBAR (1911-1996) FISHING LADIES, SIGNED & DATED BOTTOM RIGHT 81 Oil on Canvas Size: 43 x 42 inches Property of Mr & Mrs Gupta Family Footnotes: Born on June 15, 1911, near Udupi in Karnataka, Kattinjeri Krishna Hebbar's artistic inclination bloomed early, nurtured by the delicate hands of his father shaping Ganesha idols. Despite his dalliance with impressionism at the Sir J. J. School of Art, Bombay, from 1934-38, Indian classical art remained his enduring muse. Guided by the profound wisdom of Sri Lankan philosopher Ananda Coomaraswamy, Hebbar embarked on a journey into the tapestry of traditional Indian art, weaving its essence with surrealism and abstraction. Enraptured by Amrita Sher-Gil's fusion of Eastern ethos with Western techniques, Hebbar sought deeper enlightenment in Europe in 1949.Under the luminous mentorship of Professor Cavailles at the Académie Julian, Paris, he honed his craft, later delving into the realms of graphics at École Estienne. From 1964-75, he traversed Europe, sharing his vision through exhibitions. Upon his return, Hebbar, an eternal seeker, experimented with mediums and rhythms, even embracing Kathak to decipher the heartbeat of creation.Instinctively capturing the ethos of a burgeoning India, he painted a tableau of both jubilation and sorrow. Recognized as a fellow of the Lalit Kala Akademi in 1976, he chaired the Artist's Centre, Bombay, from 1953-73, and was adorned with the Padma Bhushan in 1989. His legacy transcends mortal confines, lingering in the ethereal realm of artistic immortality, as he departed on March 26, 1996.

KATTINGERI KRISHNA HEBBAR INDIAN OIL PAINTING 1971

    Est: $100 - $150

Kattingeri Krishna Hebbar, or K. K. Hebbar, Indian, 1911 to 1996, an oil on canvas painting depicting a Post Impressionist scene with two men ploughing a field with oxen and a woman sowing seeds, 1971. Signed and dated lower right. Note: Hebbar was born in 1912 in the land of Yakshgana in Canara. His initial academic training was at J J School of Art, Bombay. Later, as a student at the Academy of Julian at Paris, he was highly inspired by the vocabulary of Modern art where line and form transforms into a pictorial language which was acceptable toHebbar’s Indian traditional sensibility. He was influenced by masters like Matisse and Braque and like them freed his paintings from unnecessary shading. Later he used the coloured gradation from dark to light to obtain shade gradations. His lines have an expressive regularity. There is an intensity of emotion in his work since he felt strong ties with his subject. One of a kind artwork. Modern And Contemporary South Asian Art.
