ADRIAN HEATH (1920-1992) BLACK PAINTING NO. 1, 1960 oil on canvas 152cm x 182cm (59 7/8in x 71 ¾in) Private Collection, U.K., acquired c.1980s. This striking, sweeping work by Adrian Heath marks a key moment in his career, as it was in 1960 that he definitively moved away from the tightly rendered geometry of his breakthrough works of the 1950s, towards a looser, more instinctual and gestural method of image-making. In the present work, especially in the use of black as the dominant colour, one thinks immediately of, say, Robert Motherwell and Franz Kline. This is certainly an ‘American’ painting in look and feel. Heath may have been a decade older than the likes of Robyn Denny, Richard Smith and Ralph Rumney, who are often seen as the earliest British artists to ‘adopt’ American Abstract Expressionism and the writings of Clement Greenberg, but the influence of the two major exhibitions of the new American painting at the Tate in London - in 1956 and 1959 - was always unlikely to pass by an artist as sophisticated as Heath, who had been up to date with anything and everything avant-garde in art since the 1940s. As well as conceptual and stylistic cues, American art also offered British painters a glimpse into the possibilities of scale – a scale that matched the philosophical ambition of Abstract Expressionism to create new worlds, rather than merely replicate the one around us. These ambitions would have been held in check in Britain in the 1950s, with rationing affecting supplies of canvas and paint, but by the late ‘50s and early ‘60s, both space to work and material to work with had become available. Heath’s work noticeably became larger in the 1960s - part of this boom in the scale of British art - the new ‘situation’, to take the title of the ground-breaking exhibition at the Royal Society of British Artists Galleries in 1960, where the only requirement to entry was that the work should be ‘not less than 30 square feet’ in size.     Another key influence on the shift in Heath’s art was his time spent teaching at the Bath Academy of Art at Corsham Court in the late ‘50s. There he worked with the likes of Peter Lanyon and Robyn Denny, in an atmosphere that prized experimentation, improvisation and the primacy of gestural painting. Heath’s work of the early ‘60s runs parallel with that of Lanyon – and Heath himself had long been embedded in the scene in St Ives, even if he stayed resolutely fixed in Fitzrovia. He was a great conduit of ideas running between these two centres of British modernism – with Patrick Heron then carrying this link over the Atlantic, creating a unique and often overlooked connection between the American and British art worlds. Yet for all that is new and different about Black Painting, it still speaks to the fundamentals of Heath’s paintings of the 1950s, in which he tracked the shape and form of spirals slowly unwinding under the pressure of their own coiled energy. In his works of the ‘60s, this energy was exploded, the elements forced apart, although a sense of circular movement remains. And whilst they look very different from his first experiments in abstraction, these paintings still adhere to the ideas that Heath laid out in 1954 in Nine Abstract Artists, edited by Lawrence Alloway, the first ‘manifesto’ of British Constructive art, namely: ‘The thing of interest is the actual life of the work: its growth from a particular white canvas or board…It is the process, the method of development that is the life of the painting and this that absorbs my interest rather than the attractions of any particular form or colour. The forms themselves, their size and position are born from the process.’

§ ADRIAN HEATH (BRITISH, 1920-1992) ADRIAN HEATH (BRITISH, 1920-1992) Untitled dated 'May 77' (verso) oil on canvas 153 x 126.3 cm. (60 1/2 x 49 3/4 in.) Born in Burma in 1920, Heath spent his formative years studying in the U.K. and eventually went onto study under and among some of the most prominent British artists. In 1938 he attended Newlyn School of Art in Cornwall, under Stanhope Forbes, and the following year had enrolled in Slade Art School. However, when during the war, Heath was captured as a Prisoner of War in German camp Stalag 383, he became acquainted with fellow artist Terry Frost. It was not only Frost who Heath nurtured relations with, he became involved with many other artist who later became defined as the St Ives School. Heath spent much time in Cornwall, visiting in both 1949 and 1951. There he met with Ben Nicholson, where the two shared a mutual interest in abstract art. Other artist Heath shared explorations and artistic pursuits with were those such as William Scott, who also resided and worked in St Ives. The collaboration between Heath, William Scott and other artist’s such as Moore, Caulfield and Hoyland and many others was chronicled in the 1973 series of prints titled The Rothko Memorial Portfolio However, Adrian Heath’s oeuvre is characterized by his often large-scale, transient canvases, as exemplified in the present work. His style reflects a true fusion of stylistic and technical elements, ranging from Constructivist and abstract tendencies, using bold colours and geometric shapes, to later works where semi-figurative elements became more prominent. This 1977 piece showcases Heath’s mastery of colour and texture, particularly through the use of a deep red palette. Heath’s contribution to British Abstraction is demonstrated through both the informal exhibitions help in his Fitzrovia studio, featuring works by Scott, Hilton and Frost, to his publication of ‘Abstract Painting: Its Origin and Meaning’ in 1953.

Heath would carefully rotate and shift shapes in order to produce new interactions and an overall balance to the composition, liberating his work from the constraints of figuration and allowing it to exist as a self-contained object. This work was produced during a hugely productive stage of his career. He had his first solo exhibition at the Redfern Gallery the previous year and in 1954 organised the publication of 'Nine British Abstract Artists' written by Lawrence Alloway, detailing the development of concurrent strands of abstraction in Britain, which lead to a landmark group exhibition at the Redfern Gallery in 1955, with William Scott and Kenneth and Mary Martin, amongst others. Related works can be seen in public works, such as 'Composition, Blue, Black and Brown, 1952' (Tate), 'Divided Form' (Sheffield Museums) and 'Composition: Red and Black, 1954-55' (Sainsbury Centre for Visual Art).  Heath was a major point of connection between the St Ives School (he met artists including Ben Nicholson in the 1950s) and the movement of British Constructivism, through which he was associated with contemporaries such as Anthony Hill and Victor Pasmore. • ADRIAN HEATH (BRITISH 1920-1992) ABSTRACT WITH RED AND ORANGE signed with initials AH lower right pencil, watercolour and bodycolour on paper 49 x 36cm/ 19 1/4 x 14 1/4in 59.5 x 47cm/ 23 1/2 x 18 1/2in (framed) Executed circa 1980. Property from a Deceased Estate, London Born in Burma, after attending Bryanston school in Dorset, Heath took classes with Stanhope Forbes in Newlyn, Cornwall before enrolling at the Slade. During the Second World War he served with the RAF as a tail gunner on Wellington Bombers. Taken prisoner after a failed mission, he spent the majority of the war incarcerated at Stalag 383 in Bavaria. There he met fellow prisoner Terry Frost (1915-2003), and taught him to paint. Following an unsuccessful attempt to escape, Heath spent much of his time in solitary confinement during which he developed his abstract approach to form. After the War he finished his course at the Slade, and spent time in Paris and Carcassonne. In the late 1940s and early 1950s he lived in Cornwall where he met Ben Nicholson and William Scott in St Ives. He was also a close associate of both Victor Pasmore and Anthony Hill. Heath became the main link between the emerging St Ives School in Cornwall and the British Constructivists based in London. He helped to organise the first post-war show of abstract art at the Artists International Association gallery in 1951, wrote on the origin and meaning of Abstract Art, and became the AIA's chairman (1954-1964). He served on the Arts Council's advisory art panel from 1964 to 1967.
