      ˜A POSTHUMOUS PORTRAIT MINIATURE OF CAPTAIN JAMES BRADBY RN (1768-1795) BY THOMAS HEAPHY (1775-1835), 1802 in naval uniform, signed with initials TH and dated 1802, on ivory, the backing card further signed and dated, verre eglomisé bordered glass, rectangular black lacquer frame, 7.5cm oval; together with a miniature of his younger brother Lieutenant Bonamy Bradby RN (1772-1795), English School, circa 1795, in naval uniform and matching frame, 7.7cm oval (2) Admiral James Bradby (1738-1809) of Hamble, Southampton and his wife Mary Thoume, had three sons in the navy, of which two, those portrayed here, both perished from yellow fever contracted on Martinique. Provenance: Collection of Thomasine Grenfell White (1877-1956), whose great-aunt was Lucy Jane Bradby. Descriptions in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports and all lots are sold as viewed.       watercolor on paper, signed and dated 1816 at lower left, presented under glass in an ornate antique gilt and composition frame with oak leaf and acorn motif. SS 7.5 x 9.75 in.; DOA 17 3/8 x 15.25 in. Heaphy established the Society of British Artists in 1823, to which he was elected its first president. A noted portraitist, 39 original watercolor portraits by Heaphy are in the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery, London, UK. An antique hand-written note affixed to the verso identifies the sitter as Sir William East. Born in 1738, East was created a Baronet in 1766. He resided in the early Georgian manor, Hall Place, Maidenhead, Berkshire, built by his father. This portrait is accompanied by English Country Houses: Early Georgian 1715-1760 by Christopher Hussey (London: Country Life Limited, 1965).       Engraving begun by Anker Smith (English, 1759-1819) and finished by Thomas Heaphy (English, 1775-1835) after Smith's death, after the painting by Heaphy. "Field Marshall the Duke of Wellington Giving Orders to His Generals Previous to A General Action", hand colored engraving, published in London by Thomas Heaphy in 1822. Engraving depicts the Duke of Wellington surrounded by cavalry and foot soldiers as he gives orders on the ground at the Battle of the Nivelle during the Peninsular war on November 10, 1813, a battle between the French Empire and the allied armies of the United Kingdom, Portugal, and Spain.       signed l.c.: THeaphy1802 watercolour over pencil on two sheets joined, unframed CATALOGUE NOTE Thomas Heaphy drew several portraits of Lord Palmerston of which this and another, also dated 1802, in the National Portrait Gallery (NPG 751), are the earliest. These two portrait drawings show him as a young man of eighteen, shortly after the death of his father, and were commissioned for presentation to his guardian, Lord Pelham. Lord Palmerston was one of the greatest Victorian statesmen and one of the most powerful figures in European politics. He was elected a Member of Parliament in 1807 and soon became an advocate of Catholic emancipation and Parliamentary reform. He was successively Secretary at War between 1809-1828, Foreign Secretary between 1830-1841 and1846-1851, Home Secretary between 1853 and 1855 and Prime Minister between 1855-1858 and 1859-1865.
