(as Beach at Sunset) Lot note: Among prominent mid-nineteenth century American painters, Martin Johnson Heade was probably the most intimately attentive to nuances of climate and environmental biodiversity, whether in his images of eastern wetland marshes (which make up one-fifth of his output), still lifes of orchids, Brazilian hummingbirds in their natural habitats, or atmospheric marine and coastal views. Belonging to this last category, the present painting, signed and dated "1863," has newly come to light. The painting will be included in the next edition of Theodore Stebbins's catalogue raisonné of Heade's work. Stebbins believes the painting to be a finished work rather than an oil sketch. He states in a letter accompanying the painting: "In 1862 and until September 1863 when he left for Brazil, Heade was living in Boston doing numerous marine pictures along the New England coast including Newburyport, Massachusetts; Rye Beach, New Hampshire, and Penobscot Bay, Rhode Island." The painting is inscribed verso (not in the artist's hand), "On Long Island Sound," which Stebbins notes is "not an unreasonable guess because there are some related Long Island Sound views from 1875-76, but the location seems inaccurate." Heade's initial seascapes, influenced by those of his close associate Frederic E. Church, whose work he came to know while living in New York's Tenth Street Studio building from November 1858 through June 1860, often featured approaching thunderstorms, storm-tossed waves, sunsets, and darkening skies in open-ended panoramic compositions. He also began to create more quiescent, light-filled shoreline views, in the mode of the Luminist-Transcendentalist images of John Frederick Kensett, Francis Silva, and Sanford Gifford, but with a softer, more mystical light, sharing, as noted by Stebbins, with the work of the German romantic landscapist Caspar David Friedrich "a sense of loneliness and isolation." An example is Dawn, 1862 (Museum of Fine Arts, Boston). In 1863, a new clarity along with a calmer, more cheerful mood suggests that Heade became familiar at the time with the work of the Gloucester, Massachusetts, painter Fitz Henry Lane. An article in the Boston Evening Transcript on August 12, 1863, announcing Heade's imminent departure for Brazil, described him as "the artist so well known for his landscapes, with rich sunsets and sparkling stretches of ocean." Such a description fits this work of Luminist mist and stillness, in which the sunset light, gathered in the dense atmosphere along the horizon line, is reflected across a glassy sea. Sailboats still on the water suggest that nightfall is not imminent, conveying a sense of unhurried, suspended time on an early summer evening. In the foreground, rock ledges echo the shapes of the cumulus clouds, still infused with the sun's afterglow. Pointing upward and catching some of their light, the outcroppings at the shore evoke the solitude of works by Friedrich. In his letter, Stebbins comments: "This is a lovely little picture, with sophisticated use of related grays and gray greens in the water and sky. Dr. Theodore E. Stebbins, Jr.'s catalogue raisonné documents four floral still lifes which use the same decorative bud vase seen in the present painting as a container for presenting flowers. (T.E. Stebbins, The Life and Work of Martin Johnson Heade, New Haven, Connecticut, 2000, cat. nos. 511, 512, 519 and 531) The vessel is a Japanese vase of the Meiji period. The body of the bottle is made of copper or brass, to which the silver bamboo decoration is applied. The four other floral still lifes in which Heade depicted this Meiji vase are dated, or can be dated, according to Stebbins' scholarship, to the period between 1883 and 1890. In each of Heade's presentations of it, the vase is shown at the same angle that it is in the present work, with the applied decoration turned to the right, and at least half of it extending out of view around to the back of the vessel. In circa 1865-75, more than a decade before he painted this group of still lifes, Heade made an oil sketch of the Japanese vase on a small 8 x 10 inch piece of unstretched canvas, now in the collection of the St. Augustine Historical Society, St. Augustine, Florida. (T.E. Stebbins, The Life and Work of Martin Johnson Heade, New Haven, Connecticut, 2000, cat. nos. 382) That study probably served as the "painted model" for this and the other related paintings. It is noteworthy to mention that the artist annotated his initial sketch of the Meiji vase with the words "on yellow table." The present painting indeed shows the vase on a yellow colored cloth, painted in Heade's characteristic way of showing the nap of velvet with many vertical strokes of the brushpoint. The canvas containing Heade's initial annotated sketch of this vase also depicts a red rose that is not fully open and facing to the left. Other related oil sketches on small pieces of unstretched canvas from the same time frame also feature studies of red roses, probably painted from life to serve as models for later paintings (also in the St. Augustine Historical Society). (One of those small oil sketches depicts a rose very close in shape and profile to the large blossom Heade painted on the right side of this arrangement.) Interestingly, the pentimenti visible beneath the rose at top left in this bouquet reveal that Heade's original concept for this flower was shaped differently from its finished appearance. The pentimento is very close to the rose on the oil sketch containing his study for the vase. Taken together, it seems that this still life is more closely dependent upon Heade's initial sketches than the other four in the series with Meiji vases, which begin to deviate from the initial conception both in terms of kinds of tabletops they depict, and the extent to which rose leaves begin occluding parts of the vase. Consequently, the present still life may be the earliest, or one of the first, Heade created in the group of five. We would like to thank Dr. Theodore E. Martin Johnson Heade (1819 - 1904) "Only" (Red Rose in a Federal Glass) Oil on Windsor and Newton Artist Board. This painting was part of a series of about ten small works that depict one or two red roses in a simple glass tumbler. This work has characteristics consistent with Heade's other works such as the reflection of the glass on a shiny wood surface. Completed between the years of 1878-83, M.J. Heade was still in New York, shortly before moving to Florida. The artist concentrated his efforts on the look and detail of the rose itself, using many tones of red and pink, with attention to the sculptural quality also. Signed on lower right "M.J. Heade". Martin Johnson Heade is a significant figure in the history of American Luminism and American still life painting. Heade is best known for his florals, hummingbirds, Florida landscapes, and Marshfield scenes. Today, Heade's meticulously painted works continue to enchant us with their opulent surfaces, rich textures, and jewel-like details. We would like to thank Dr. Theodore E. Stebbins, Jr. for examining this work in the original and confirming its authenticity. This work will be included in the next edition of his Martin Johnson Heade catalogue raisonné. Dr. Stebbins' catalogue raisonné documents four floral still lifes which use the same decorative bud vase seen in the present painting as a container for presenting flowers ( The Life and Work of Martin Johnson Heade, New Haven, 2000, cat. nos. 511, 512, 519 and 531). The vessel is a Japanese vase of the Meiji period. The body of the bottle is made of copper or brass, to which the silver bamboo decoration is applied. The four other floral still lifes in which Heade depicted this Meiji vase are dated, or can be dated, according to Stebbins' scholarship, to the period between 1883 and 1890. In each of Heade's presentations of it, the vase is shown at the same angle that it is in the present work, with the applied decoration turned to the right, and at least half of it extending out of view around to the back of the vessel. In c. 1865-75, more than a decade before he painted this group of still lifes, Heade made an oil sketch of the Japanese vase on a small 8 x 10 inch piece of unstretched canvas, now in the collection of the St. Augustine Historical Society, St. Augustine, FL (Stebbins, 2000, cat. no. 382). That study probably served as the "painted model" for this and the other related paintings. It is noteworthy to mention that the artist annotated his initial sketch of the Meiji vase with the words "on yellow table." The present painting indeed shows the vase on a yellow colored cloth, painted in Heade's characteristic way of showing the nap of velvet with many vertical strokes of the brushpoint. The canvas containing Heade's initial annotated sketch of this vase also depicts a red rose that is not fully open and facing to the left. Other related oil sketches on small pieces of unstretched canvas from the same time frame also feature studies of red roses, probably painted from life to serve as models for later paintings (also in the St. Augustine Historical Society). (One of those small oil sketches depicts a rose very close in shape and profile to the large blossom Heade painted on the right side of this arrangement.) Interestingly, the pentimenti visible beneath the rose at top left in this bouquet reveal that Heade's original concept for this flower was shaped differently from its finished appearance. The pentimento is very close to the rose on the oil sketch containing his study for the vase. Taken together, it seems that this still life is more closely dependent upon Heade's initial sketches than the other four in the series with Meiji vases, which begin to deviate from the initial conception both in terms of kinds of tabletops they depict, and the extent to which rose leaves begin occluding parts of the vase. Consequently, the present still life may be the earliest, or one of the first, Heade created in the group of five. HID01801242017
