      • Edith Head | Tippi Hedron "The Birds" Signed Screentest Costume Illustrations
        Jun. 13, 2024

Edith Head | Tippi Hedron "The Birds" Signed Screentest Costume Illustrations

        Est: $4,000 - $6,000

Two original signed Edith Head costumes illustrations of Tippi Hedren as "Melanie Daniels" in Alfred Hitchcock's suspense thriller The Birds (Universal, 1963).  Both illustrations are of costumes only worn for screen tests, not worn in the final production of the film. The first illustration features a two-piece evening gown ensemble in pearl white, featuring a strapless hourglass gown with a center front slit at the front, a lace sleeveless blouse overlay with bow accent, white gloves, white shoes, and earrings. Notations are written in pencil reading, "Tippi Hedren test, lace test, no bow at the back." There is also a "P. Hart" signature at the bottom left corner and Head's signature at the bottom right corner. The second illustration features Melanie Daniels in another evening outfit, a black lace bodice with a tailored pearl white skirt, accessorized with a shawl, gloves, and shoes. Written in pencil is Tippi Hedren and signed at the bottom right corner is Edith Head. Hedren is seen wearing these specific designs during her screen test for the film.  Hedren only had three costume changes for the entire film, costing a total of $5,000. The shoot was hard on Hedren who was told that on the day of filming the bird attack sequence they would be using real birds; the actress sustained cuts from the live birds. When the scene was shot she broke down and was ordered to a four-day bed rest by the studio doctor. Even though Hedren only had three looks in the film, Head was in charge of designing a custom press tour wardrobe that cost $18,000. The outfits were designed after birds for an added conversational element.

      • Edith Head | Tippi Hedren "The Birds" Signed Costume Illustration
        Jun. 13, 2024

Edith Head | Tippi Hedren "The Birds" Signed Costume Illustration

        Est: $5,000 - $7,000

An original signed Edith Head mixed-medium costume illustration for Tippi Hedren as "Melanie Daniels in Alfred Hitchcock's thriller The Birds (Universal 1963). The illustration features a Tippi Hedren-like full-length figure in an eau de nil green top and skirt, holding a brown fur coat. The top features a mock turtle neck and a belted high-waisted pencil cut below the knee. There is an Edith Head signature at the bottom left corner of the illustration.  Hitchcock personally picked the colors Hedren could wear in the film, which were green and blue. Head created six eau de nil green suits mimicking Chanel's couture tailoring, which was very popular at the time. There were a total of six copies of the skirt suit made for the film because it served as the character's primary costume and because the suit would become distressed by the birds. There was a cage built on the set large enough for a camera, two male bird handlers, and Hedren. The large crows and seagulls were thrown at Hedren in close range. Costumer Rita Riggs was on hand with scissors to distress the suit. Hedren recalls filming the iconic scene in Jay Jorgensen's book Edith Head: The Fifty Year Career of Hollywood's Greatest Costume Designer, saying, "The birds weren't angry as they were unable to direct their flight correctly when tossed so close to me [...] The poor things were frightened and didn't know what they were doing. I was bitten on the lip and scratched directly under the eye." Hedren only had three costume changes for the entire film, costing a total of $5,000. The shoot was hard on Hedren who was told that on the day of filming the bird attack sequence, they would be using real birds, the actress sustained cuts from the live birds. When the scene was shot she broke down and was ordered to a four-day bed rest by a doctor, Even though Hedron only had three looks in the film, Head was in charge of designing a custom press tour wardrobe that cost $18,000. The press wardrobe was designed after different birds to engage in conversation on the wardrobe. The evening attire was all black and white with coordinating accessories since Hedren was only traveling with a single piece of luggage.

        Sep. 08, 2023

EDITH HEAD | "HERE COME THE GIRLS" COSTUME DESIGN ILLUSTRATIONS

        Est: $800 - $1,200

A set of two Edith Head costume designs for the film production Here Comes The Girls starring Bob Hope, Tony Martin, and Arlene Dahl (Paramount 1953).  Two mixed medium costume designs by Edith Head, likely by costume designer and sketch artist Yvonne Wood. Both sketches feature two full-length female figures in white and gold Grecian-style costumes. Both figures wear a bra-top and a draped high-low skirt, the short hem at the front allows for the skirt's draping to cascade as it goes into a train at the back. One sketch is labeled "Miss Bacchus" with the figure holding a drinking glass and a gold vine of grapes. The other sketch is labeled "DIANA" with two names written in pencil reading "Yvonne, Ruby." This figure holds a bow and has a quiver with a Greek key motif hung crossbody holding arrows. Both sketches have signed initials CB, likely by Claude Binyon the film's director.  Here Comes The Girls is a musical comedy starring Bob Hope, who plays Stanly Snodgrass who gets cast in a Broadway play when the lead is attacked by a crazed fan who is obsessed with the play's lead actress Irene played by Arlene Dahl. The crazed fan is jealous of anyone acting opposite Irene, putting them in danger, but in Hope's case, hijinks and hilarity ensue even with a knife-wielding killer on the loose.

        Sep. 08, 2023

EDITH HEAD | "GUNFIGHT AT THE O.K. CORRAL" COSTUME DESIGN ILLUSTRATIONS FOR RHODA FLEMMING AND JO VAN FLEET

        Est: $800 - $1,200

Two Edith Head costume designs, a sketch of Rhoda Flemming as Laura Denbow, and a sketch of Jo Van Fleet as Kate,  in the film production Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, starring alongside Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas (Paramount, 1957). The first sketch is a mixed medium costume design by Edith Head, an illustration likely by sketch artist Pat Barto. The illustration is of Fleming as Denbow poised against a fence wearing a fringe leather jacket, gaucho pants, boots, cowboy hat, bandana, and gloves. On the illustration stapled at the right-hand corner is a swatch of suede. There are several hand-written notations documenting the costume for production continuity reading, “#3 COAT #1 SUIT, #6 + #7 INT RANCH HOUSE SC. 147, EXT. K RANCH SC. 148, EXT. ROAD TO TOWN SC. 149-177, INT. CHANCE SALOON SC. 175-212, EXT NO CHANCE SALOON SC. 213, EXT. K RANCH SC. 221.” There is no signiture present.  The second sketch is a mixed medium costume design by Edith Head, an illustration likely by sketch artist Pat Barto. This illustration is of Jo Van Fleet as Kate dressed in all black posed with her left hand on her hip and the right at her gun holster. The outfit is comprised of a western bib shirt with a folded collar done up with a beige knotted bandana, belted high-waisted pants that taper to the ankle, knee-high cowboy boots, and a cowboy hat, complete with a holster slung on the hips. "Kate" is written in pencel at the left side of the sketch, there is no signiture present.  This western drama features Lancaster and Douglas, opposites who team up, to take on a gang of cattle stealing thugs in Tombstone, Arizona. These straight shooters bring adventure and excitement, illustrating the lawless Wild West.

        Sep. 08, 2023

ANNE BAXTER | "QUEEN NEFRETIRI" "THE TEN COMANDMENTS" EDITH HEAD SIGNED COSTUME DESIGN ILLUSTRATION

        Est: $800 - $1,200

An original costume design by Edith Head for Anne Baxter as Queen Nefretiri for the film The Ten Commandments (Paramount 1956).  A mixed medium costume design by Edith Head for Anne Baxtor, illustration likely by sketch artist and costume designer Adele Balkan, who was uncredited for wardrobe. The sketch features a full-length Queen Nefretiri lounging on a couch surrounded by Ancient Egyptian decor in a pleated sheer gown, showing the character's body outline. The gown is a two-tone jade and cypress green, the gown fits close to the body, and the pleated cape is cut below the bust at the front but goes into a floor-length train at the back (the cape's hem is casually draped on the lower legs). The look is accessorized with jewelry, gold bracelets, a collared bib necklace, rings, earrings, hair ornaments, and a pair of wedge gold sandals. There are two chiffon swatches at the top right corner; then at the bottom right corner is a profile illustration of Nefretiri in the outfit. The illustration is signed at the bottom left corner with Edtih's first name, and notated with the character's name and scenes where the costume is featured, "To John With Love Edith, Nefretiri, #2-Nefretiri's Balconey-Scenes-B-32-33-34." Then at the back, there are two notations in pencil at the top right corner, "HEADRESS PLATE #27, COSTUME PLATE # 907" and the left bottom corner "To John Anderson." Anne Baxter wears this costume when Rameses comes to express his growing concern for Moses, both he and Nefretiri argue as Rameses dictates his authority over her and acknowledges her as his wife and property. Nefretiri says how she could never love him, and he responds that she must obey him even if she doesn't love him.

An original watercolor and pencil design depicting the red dress to be worn by Judy Garland in I Could Go On Singing, 1963, inscribed by Head in pencil Garland at upper right and signed Edith Head at lower left. The full sheet 17 x 14 (43 x 35.5 cm). Fine overall. I Could Go On Singing, 1963, was Judy Garland's final film role. Garland had not sung in film since her 1954 perfomance in A Star Is Born. Of her performance in the film, Dorothy Masters of the New York Daily News wrote "Judy Garland is back on screen in a role that might have been custom-tailored for her particular talents. A new song, I Could Go On Singing, provides her with a little clowning, a chance to be gay, a time for wistfulness, an occasion for tears. She and Dirk Bogarde play wonderfully well together." Garland's performance was also lauded for its vibrancy, a comment no doubt encouraged by the striking red dress designed by Edith Head for the film which was presented to audiences in Technicolor.
