Attributed to Sir George Hayter (British, 1792-1871)

    Est: £400 - £600

Attributed to Sir George Hayter (British, 1792-1871) Portrait of the actress Margaret Agnes Somerville (1799-1883), half-length, in an Empire style dress pencil, watercolour and bodycolour 38 x 31 cm; sold with an engraved portrait of Miss Somerville published by J. Bell, 1817 (2) Provenance: By descent within the family of the sitter Scottish born Margaret Somerville was educated in London where her acting ability was noticed at her second audition at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, where Lord Byron was in the pit - his enthusiasm prompted her engagement and she made her debut there in 1816 alongside Edmund Kean. In 1819 she married the theatrical manager and playwright Alfred Bunn (1796-1860) and for many seasons from 1821 she played the role of Elizabeth I in his adaptation of Walter Scott’s Kenilworth. By 1833 Bunn was managing both Drury Lane and Covent Garden theatres but Miss Somerville (her stage name), who specialised as a ‘tragic’ actress, ceased performing after a fall out between her husband and the actor William Macready resulted in the latter assaulting Bunn. A great beauty, her colourful life (as well as her husband’s increasing infidelities and eventual bankruptcy) involving her long liaison with Byron’s friend Colonel William Berkeley the eldest, but illegitimate son of the 5th Earl of Berkeley, earned her the epithet ‘the Melpomene (the Muse of tragedy) of the Caledonian stage’. Berkeley not only had her live with him at Berkeley Castle but left her £1000 and an annuity of £700 for life enabling her two daughters to emigrate to America - where she herself later went, dying there in Faribault, Minnesota in 1883. Portraits in oil of Margaret in theatrical roles, by Thomas Wageman, are in the Royal Collection and the National Portrait Gallery. A print of the actress by Frederick Christian Lewis Sr., after Sir George Hayter, was published in 1816.

    Est: £700 - £900

Sir George Hayter,  British 1792-1871-  Portrait of Charles Elphinstone Fleming in profile, preparatory sketch for 'The House of Commons';  oil on board, bears label for Winsor & Newton, Rathbone Place, verso, 35.5 x 30.3 cm.  Provenance:  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  Son of the 11th Lord Elphinstone, Charles Elphinstone Fleming, also spelt Fleeming, (1774-1840) entered the Navy as a young man, and by the age of 20 had reached the rank of Commander. Fleming served in both the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, and subsequently entered politics. He was elected a member of Parliament for the constituency of Stirlingshire on 13 January 1802.  This present work is likely a study for Sir George Hayter’s expansive oil The House of Commons, 1833, which is in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery [NPG 54]. Hayter depicts the first meeting of the House of Commons following the 1832 Great Reform Act and the subsequent general election that produced a landslide majority for the Whig Government. The picture includes nearly four hundred identifiable figures, most of which are MPs, like Charles Elphinstone Fleming. A number of other head studies for sitters in this group portrait are in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery, such as one of Charles Wood [NPG 5580], Sir Robert Harry Inglis [NPG 4968], and Sir George Elliot [NPG 2511].  As Principal Painter in Ordinary to Queen Victoria, Hayter was best known for his portraits and large works of important royal events. He did not receive an official commission to paint the House of Commons, but was a staunch supporter of the reform movement, and many of his patrons were prominent Whig politicians and aristocrats. In Hayter’s finished work Fleming is positioned on the left-hand side, towards the window, seated in the back row. His profile matches that of this sketch. Fleming died in 1842 as an Admiral of the Blue.

QUEEN VICTORIA, FULL LENGTH, IN CORONATION ROBESOil on canvasSigned and dated 'painted by Sir George Hayter 1838, finished 184*' (lower centre)127 x 95cm (50 x 37¼ in.)Provenance:The Forbes Collection, Old Battersea House, LondonTheir sale, Lyon & Turnbull, Edinburgh, 1 November 2011, Lot 147.George Hayter was the son of the portrait miniaturist Charles Hayter (1761-1835), who also studied and taught perspective and was appointed Professor of Perspective and Drawing to Princess Charlotte. Initially tutored by his father, George went on to the Royal Academy Schools where he studied under the famous Swiss painter Henry Fuseli. Hayter's work was highly favoured by Queen Victoria, before his appointment as her 'Painter of History and Portrait' in 1837, he had impressed the young Princess with his skill as a portraitist and helped her with her first attempts at oil painting. On the death of David Wilkie in 1841 she also appointed him as her Principal Painter in Ordinary, followed by a knighthood in 1842. This portrait, painted in 1838 on the occasion of Queen Victoria's Coronation, is another version of The State Portrait of Queen Victoria that is still displayed to the public at Buckingham Palace. It shows the 19 year old Queen seated in her Homage Chair in red and gold Coronation robes and the Imperial State Crown, carrying the Sceptre with the Cross. Hayter's first background for the painting showed the Queen in Westminster Abbey where she was crowned on the 28th of June of that year, but he was to alter this later, placing her in a more generic regal setting. Several versions of this portrait were done, with the assistance of the artist's son Angelo, to be sent as diplomatic gifts. Another full-scale version of the State Portrait is part of the collection of the National Portrait Gallery and a smaller copy resides in the dining room of Holyrood House.
