Frank Jay Haynes (October 28, 1853 – March 10, 1921), known as F. Jay or the Professor to almost all that knew him, was a professional photographer, publisher and entrepreneur from Minnesota who played a major role in documenting through photographs, the settlement and early history of the great Northwest. He became both the official photographer of the Northern Pacific Railway and of Yellowstone National Park as well as operating early transportation concessions in the park. His photographs were widely published in articles, journals, books and turned into stereographs and postcards in the late 19th and early 20th century.

    Featured in this lot is this F. Jay Haynes and Frank A. Rhinehart stereoview collection. There are three stereoviews in this collection. The two from F. Jay Haynes are on thicker classic stereoview material and the last one by Frank A. Rhinehart is on a thinner cardstock. The titles of the stereoviews include the follows: 587 Indian Burial Ground (F. Jay Haynes) - 844 Sitting Bull's Deserted Teepee-Qu'appelle (F. Jay Haynes) - 166 Black-Hawk, Apache Chief (Frank A. Rhinehart) - 165 Washington's Grave, Mt. Vernon. The condition of this collection of stereoviews is well preserved with some slight browning to the cards and shows wear to the outside layer of the cards but otherwise shows a well preserved overall condition. The measurements of these stereoviews range from 7" x 3 1/2" to 7" x 3 3/8". The collective weight of these cards is U4oz.

    This is an original circa 1880-1910’s F.J. Haynes Park Views photography studio trade store sign from their Yellowstone National Park studio. F. Jay Haynes (1853-1921) was a prolific photographer who traveled extensively in the West and was best known for his early photographs of Yellowstone National Park. He was also the official photographer for the Northern Pacific Railroad, and for a time operated a special railroad car equipped as a mobile photography studio, which he called "Haynes Palace Studio." The metal sign shows a off-white background with black lettering reading, "Haynes Park Views". There are four mounting holes on the sign in the corners. The sign shows good condition overall with some slight wear from its age and use over the years but no obvious signs of damage are noted. The sign measures 9 1/2" L x 18" W.

It measures 16 1/2 inches by 21 1/2 and depicts one of the United States' most famous natural formations; Old Faithful. The lower right corner is embossed "PHOTO/YELLOWSTONE PARK". The geyser which is located in the Northwestern corner of Wyoming in Yellowstone National Park has become the most famous attraction in the park. An uncredited photograph taken by F. Jay Haynes, who was the official photographer for the Northern Pacific Railroad Company and Yellowstone National Park. Haynes took a series of photographs of the Crow in 1883, including this picture of Ashishishe. The portrait was likely taken at the last spike ceremony of the Northern Pacific Railroad.

The photo itself appears to be in excellent condition and is the original frame. There is a Haynes blindstamp embossed lower right of sheet. There are slight water stains in the margins of sheet. If lot is absent of a condition report one may be requested via email. Condition report is provided as an opinion only and is no guarantee as condition can be subjective. Buyer must view photographs or scans to assist in determining condition and ask further questions if so desired.     Featured in this lot are four original F. J. Haynes photographs of Yellowstone National Park circa 1910-20s. These are all large format photographs in Yellowstone National Park and are all four stamped on the back. The first is marked on the back reading, "10124 - Great Fall from Below, 308ft., by Haynes, St. Paul" and shows the Yellowstone Great Falls from the river below as water rushes over the ledge. The second is marked on the back reading, "©35991 Tower Fall Highway and Washburn Mtn., ©Haynes Inc" and shows a lone car on the winding highway on a sunny day. The third is marked on the back and reads, "©23480 The Needle, Grand Canyon near Tower Fall ©Haynes Inc." and shows the Yellowstone River cutting through the canyon. The fourth and final photo is marked on the back reading, "©31111 Jupiter Terrace, Yellowstone Park, ©Haynes Inc." and shows a large, interesting formation of travertine. The photos show good condition overall with little to no wear present despite their antique age and use over the years. The photos measure from 10 7/8" L x 6 15/16" W to 9 7/8" L x 7 15/16" W.

The geyser has been renamed the Chinese Spring Geyser, it received its name on account of its early use by Chinese laborers as a laundry. The image shows two men standing next to the erupting geyser.     Featured in this lot are three, framed F. J. Haynes (1853-1921) Yellowstone National Park photos printed in Germany circa 1900-1910. Frank Jay Haynes, known as F. The three colored photos are set on a backing board in a nice wood frame and show three different locations in Yellowstone National Park. The left most photo shows Keppler Cascades and is numbered 14, the middle photo shows Old Faithful Geyser and is numbered 13, and the right most photo shows the 300 foot Great Falls waterfall in Yellowstone, numbered 20. The photos and frame show good condition overall with slight wear to the frame but no signs of wear or damage to the photos. The photos measure 9 3/16" L x 6 1/4" W, while the entire piece measures 17 1/8" L x 28 5/8" W x 3/4" D.

An excellent example of this boxed set, each albumen photograph in its original mount has the original legend verso (each with blue check mark) and are found in the original burgundy cloth covered box. This is the first edition of this particular Haynes set. Each has a sight size measures 4.75 x 8 with an overall size of 9 x 12 inches. The Crow scout was the first to report on the 7th Cavalry's defeat. He wears his hair in two braids with feathers, earrngs, a bandana wrapped around his neck with a slide, and a blanket wrapped around his shoulders.
