Francesco Hayez Sold at Auction Prices

Historical-scenes painter, Portrait painter, Lithographer, Painter, Genre Painter, copperplate engraver, b. 1791 - d. 1882

Francesco Hayez (Italian: [fran't?esko 'a?jets]; 10 February 1791 – 12 February 1882) was an Italian painter. He is considered one of the leading artists of Romanticism in mid-19th-century Milan, and is renowned for his grand historical paintings, political allegories, and portraits.

Francesco Hayez was from a relatively poor family from Venice. His father, Giovanni, was of French origin while his mother, Chiara Torcella, was from Murano. Francesco was the youngest of five sons. He was brought up by his mother's sister, who had married Giovanni Binasco, a well-off shipowner and art collector. Hayez displayed a predisposition for drawing since childhood. His uncle, having noticed his precocious talent, apprenticed him to an art restorer in Venice. Hayez would later became a pupil of the painter Francesco Maggiotto with whom he continued his studies for three years. He was admitted to the painting course of the New Academy of Fine Arts in Venice in 1806, where he studied under Teodoro Matteini. In 1809 he won a competition from the Academy of Venice for a one year residency at the Accademia di San Luca in Rome. He remained in Rome until 1814, then moved to Naples where he was commissioned by Joachim Murat to paint a major work depicting Ulysses at the court of Alcinous. In the mid-1830s he attended the Maffei Salon in Milan, hosted by Clara Maffei. Maffei's husband would later commissioned Hayez a portrait of his wife. In 1850 Hayez was appointed director of the Brera Academy.

Over the course of a long career, Hayez proved to be particularly prolific. His output included historic paintings designed to appeal to the patriotic sensibility of his patrons as well as works reflecting the desire to accompany a Neoclassic style to grand themes, either from biblical or classical literature. He also painted scenes from theatrical presentations. Conspicuously absent from his oeuvre, however, are altarpieces - possibly due to the Napoleonic invasions that deconsecrated many churches and convents in Northern Italy. Art historian Corrado Ricci described Hayez as a classicist who then evolved into a style of emotional tumult.

His portraits have the intensity of Ingres and the Nazarene movement. Often sitting, Hayez's subjects are often dressed in austere, black and white clothing, with little to no accoutrements. While Hayez made portraits for the nobility, he also explored other subjects like fellow artists and musicians. Late in his career, he is known to have worked using photographs.

One of Hayez's favorite themes was semi-clothed Odalisque evocative of oriental themes – a favorite topic of Romantic painters. The depictions of harems and their women allowed artists the ability to paint scenes otherwise not acceptable within society. Even Hayez's Mary Magdalene has more sensuality than religious fervor.

Hayez's painting The Kiss was considered among his best work by his contemporaries, and is possibly his most well-known effort. The anonymous, unaffected gesture of the couple does not require knowledge of myth or literature to interpret, and appeals to a modern gaze.

A scientific assessment of Hayez's career has been made complicated by his proclivity for not signing or dating his works. Often dates in his paintings indicate when the work was acquired or sold, not the time of its creation. Moreover, he often painted the same compositions several times with minimal variations if any at all.

Among his pupils from the Brera Academy were Carlo Belgioioso, Amanzio Cattaneo, Alessandro Focosi, Giovanni Battista Lamperti, Livo Pecora, Angelo Pietrasanta, Antonio Silo, Carlo Antonio Tavella, Ismaele Teglio Milla and Francesco Valaperta.

Hayez died in Milan, age 91. His studio at the Brera Academy is marked with a plate.

(Venice 1791–1881 Milan) Mary Stuart Receiving Her Death Sentence, c. 1827, oil on panel 49 x 59.5 cm, framed Provenance: Private Collection, Italy. Milan, pp. 106, 107, no. III. 3. The subject of this painting by Francesco Hayez, inspired by Friedrich Schiller’s eponymous tragedy (1759-1805) and the History of the Kingdom of Scotland by William Robertson (1721-1793), depicts the announcement of Mary Stuart's death sentence by the Earls of Kent and Shrewsbury. Mary was in prison, ostensibly for the murder of her husband Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, but in reality because of her claim to the throne of England. Mary listens to the end without emotion, makes the sign of the cross then stretches out her hand over a Bible, which happens to be lying next to her. She solemnly protests that she was innocent of the conspiracy against the life of Elisabeth I of England. The final version of this subject (195 x 240 cm) dates to 1832 and is preceded by two small, almost identical sketches on wood, both executed in 1827. The unpublished one is presented here and the other, connected to the painting, is in the Pinacoteca di Brera (Francesco Hayez, catalogue raisonné, Fernando Mazzocca, 1994, p.178, no.100). The tragedy of the unhappy Queen of Scots, favoured by Romantic culture for her character’s tragic dimension, enjoyed extraordinary literary and theatrical popularity throughout the 19th century, of which Schiller's play (1800) in 5 acts is but the best known example.

[Hayez (Francesco)] Costumi, Vestiti alla Festa da Ballo data dal Nobilissimo Sig. Conte G. Batthyany la sera del 30 gennaio 1828, first edition, 60 hand-coloured lithographs, lacking engraved title, occasional marginal staining, occasional spotting (mostly marginal), contemporary marbled boards, chipping to spine extremities, a little rubbed, housed in red cloth folding box, [Not in Colas or Lipperheide. Bobins IV, 1232], folio, Milan, Giuseppe Elena, 1828. *** During the Milan Carnival of 1828, the Hungarian Count Antonio Giuseppe Batthyany invited the Milanese aristocracy to a ball in his palace in Porta Orientale. He employed the Italian painter Francesco Hayez, a leading artist in mid-nineteenth century Milan renowned for his grand historical paintings and exceptionally fine portraits, to record the sumptuous event. Among the portraits illustrating the various costumes worn by the guests, Hayez included a portrait of the Count and a self-portrait. Very few complete copies are recorded in libraries, probably because many of the characters portrayed were able to keep the plate with their illustration.
