A very good, dark impression. As the title references, this lithograph represents a farming scene on Martha's Vineyard, where the small, uneven, rocky fields were still cut with scythes. The lithograph is based on a drawing and painting of the same subject that Benton (1889-1975) made in the mid-1920s. Fath 68.

    Thomas Marjoribanks Hay was a landscape painter who worked extensively in watercolour. Majorbanks Hay was based in Edinburgh for the majority of his artistic career, however many of his studies focus on the landscapes of Perthshire and the central Highlands. Majorbanks Hay is also known to have designed stained glass early in his career. Hay was a member of the Society of Scottish Artists and was elected RSW in 1895, and also showed at the RBSA, GI, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, MAFA, RA, RHA, RI, ROI and RSA.
