Hay used a remarkable amount of contrast given his chosen medium of black water color on white paper, with a grasp of depth and perspective apparent in his layouts. On the back of each is a card detailing the artist's life and dates of his works, and an initialed signature is in the bottom right of one of the larger two paintings.The style, en grisaille, involves the use of monochrome - drawing out white highlights by scraping it out of the paper with a pin. Artist Biography: Born in Caldwell, now Lake George, New York, DeWitt Hay was a little-known bank-note engraver and landscape artist who was one of the founding members in 1850 of the New York Watercolor Society. He settled in Tarrytown in 1870 and painted in the Adirondacks, primarily views of Lake George and Saint Regis Lake.
