      HAWKINS, BENJAMIN

      Est: $500 - $700

      193. BENJAMIN HAWKINS (1754-1816) Creek Indian "agent" who also held the title of General Superintendent of all tribes south of the Ohio River. During the course of his 21 years in these positions he would oversee the longest period of peace with the Creek, only to watch his lifetime of work destroyed by "Red Sticks" faction during the War of 1812. Rare, good content A.L.S., 1p. 4to., [Georgia], July, 20, 1814 to Gen. John Mason at the height of the Red Sticks uprising. Hawkins pens a letter of introduction for a "Mr. Carter", in part: "...he has worked for several years on our frontier in the merchantile line, and has some business for [?] your with the Indians and is acquainted with occurances among us. In the present crisis in our affairs, it would be agreeable to you to be acquainted and to converse with such a man..." Heavy glue show-through at top where letter is tipped to another sheet, yet still legible, otherwise good. A rare signature! $500-700
