Untrimmed in original boards, paper printed spine label (partial). Custom clamshell box. Some pencil markings, inconspicuously rebacked with old spine laid down, internally fresh. First edition. A "well-known book written at the request of some friends and printed for private distribution, only a few supplementary copies being provided for ordinary readers, a fact which accounts for its rarity" (Schwerdt I, 234).         [PETER HAWKER] Instructions to Young Sportsmen. London: J. Johnson, 1814. 8° (title slightly waterstained), uncut in original green boards (rebacked, preserving part of original spine but not the paper label, corners restored). FIRST EDITION. This shooting classic was by a former captain in the Peninsular war who had previously published Journal of a Regimental Officer ... in Portugal and Spain" (1810). "Written at the request of some friends and printed for private distribution, only a few supplementary copies being provided for ordinary readers" (Schwerdt), it was to be much expanded and had reached ten editions by the time Hawker died in 1853. An eleventh, edited by his son, appeared in 1859. Chute 284: "In terms of technical expertise and practical directions on shooting it was way ahead of its time"; Schwerdt I, p. 234.

London: Spottiswoode and Davison for Longman, Brown, Green [and others], 1859. 2 volumes, 8° (211 x 141mm). 9 steel-engraved plates by H. Adlard after J. Childe, C. Varley and Hawker, wood-engraved illustrations. EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED with 101 plates by various artists, most engraved or etched, including 4 double-page and 4 folding, one of these hand-coloured. (Some spotting of plates, tear at fold of the first double-page plate.) Full contemporary green morocco gilt, gilt edges. Provenance: John Arthur, 1 s t Baronet Brooke, of Almondbury, Fenay Hall, Huddersfield (1844-1920, woollen manufacturer and important collector of manuscripts and incunables; bookplate). An attractive copy of the eleventh edition with over 100 additional plates, often on India paper, a few in two states. Two plates date from the 17th century, by P. Tempest after F. Barlow, the others are late 18th early 19th century. From sources which include the Sporting Magazine, they show hunting scenes, dogs and game of all sorts, drawn by W. S. Howitt, Ph. Reinagle, S. Elmer, A. Cooper, W. Hunt, G. Stubs and other specialist sporting artists. Many are engraved by J. Scott who 'montra un talent particulier dans ses gravures de chiens et de chevaux' (Bénézit). Henry Alken is represented by a folding hand-coloured aquatint of 'Wild Fowl Shooting'. Souhart 241.

        HAWKER, Peter (1786-1853). Number I[-VI] of the Sportsman's Pocket Companion. Croydon: for the author by T. Harding [no. I] and Canterbury: for the author by W. Bristow [nos. II-VI], 1801. 8° (187 x 115mm), engraved frontispiece and 13 etched plates after Hawker, some also engraved by him, including one signed, woodcut culs-de-lampe. Contemporay speckled calf, morocco spine label (spine and corners rubbed, joints cracked). Provenance: Peter Hawker (ownership inscription and signed 4-line note dated 1852 stating: 'The only copy that exists of my first & poor attempt at book-making') -- Ralph Payne Gallwey (ownership signature dated Thirklely Park, October 1893, and inscription: 'Given me by the grandson (Mr. Peter Hawker) of the famous colonel Peter Hawker whose Diary I published this year', signed with initials, and with the post-script: 'This was written when the author was just 16') - C.F.G.R. Schwerdt (bookplate; his sale, 10 July 1939, lot 1507). THE AUTHOR'S COPY, AND SUBSEQUENTLY SCHWERDT'S COPY, OF HIS UNOBTAINABLE FIRST BOOK. Further inscriptions on the title read: 'The plates all drawn and some engraved by Master Peter Hawker 1800' and '(when 15 years of age): printed for a charity to a poor bookseller but not regularly published'. No further edition appeared until it was reprinted in 1980 with an introduction by John Marchington. Hawker, who was educated at Eton, went on to serve in the 14th light dragoons in the Peninsular war, retiring from active service in 1813 after being wounded at Talavera, but eventually rising to the rank of Lt.-Col. in the North Hampshire militia. His publications included Journal of a Regimental Officer during the Recent Campaigns in Spain and Portugal (1810) and Instructions to Young Sportsmen (1814). The latter had reached nine editions before his death, and became one of the best known 19th century sporting books. His diary, edited by Payne-Gallwey, was published in 1893.
