Cheng Haw-Chien was born in 1948 in Penang, Malaysia. He began learning Chinese brush painting and western art forms enthusiastically when he was an adolescent and his interest flourished even further after his secondary school education when he continued his academic studies in Taiwan and Hong Kong. There, he sought to refine his artistic skills under the guidance of many eminent masters. He studied the Lingnan style of painting, which fuses elements of Western and Japanese realism with Chinese ink painting on rice paper, evident with this work.

He captures the atmosphere through the rhythmic sensations delivered by constructing the terrain using an elevated perspective, infusing the scene with spirituality. In 1981, the artist embarked on a tour around the globe — Australia, New Zealand, the Pacific Island nations, Central and Southern America, the United States, Canada, Europe, Africa, lndia, Nepal, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, the Philippines and other countries. Cheng took photographs and with keen observation, he made a number of sketches from photo and memory, capturing the divergent cultures, landscapes, flora and fauna. A master of the Lingnan school in Malaysia where he was under personal tutelage of Professor Zhao Shao-ang, the renowned master of Lingnan School, China; other mentors include Reverend Chuk Mor and Taiwanese professor Liang Han Cao. Cheng pursued degree in Diplomacy and studied calligraphy in Taiwan.       Cheng Haw Chien presents a tranquil mountainside, filled with a captivating array of layers of ink, introducing colour to enhance the scene. A poetic image of serenity and optimism is expressed within this incredible natural landscape. Tiny houses nestle in the valley, partly hidden by trees and rocks. Signs of human activity are minute in scale compared to the vastness of the mountains. The artist used a variety of brushstrokes to describe the layered formations of the mountain terrains and trees, infusing the scene with the spirituality of eastern art. In 1981, the artist embarked on a tour around the globe — Australia, New Zealand, the Pacific Island nations, Central and Southern America, the United States, Canada, Europe, Africa, lndia, Nepal, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, the Philippines and other countries.
