        • ROBERT HAVELL JR. OIL, TERNS AT THE SHORE
          Dec. 09, 2023

ROBERT HAVELL JR. OIL, TERNS AT THE SHORE

          Est: $30,000 - $50,000

HAVELL JR., Robert (1793–1878). Terns at the Shore [Havell’s Tern or Forster’s Tern]. Oil on canvas. ca. 1831–1832. 25 x 30" canvas, 39" x 39" framed. Robert Havell, Jr. was the principal engraver of Audubon's Birds of America, the most significant natural history publication of all time. His aquatint engraving of John James Audubon's Birds of America is now recognized as a significant artistic achievement in its own right and an essential component of the success of Birds of America. During his collaboration with Audubon, Havell drew inspiration from and made creative contributions to the great master of bird painting, creating magnificent works in the style of Audubon. The remarkable energy of the painting paired with the dramatic motion at the center of the canvas make for an arresting scene as a small cluster of Terns stand or hover at the water's edge, preparing to scan the water for a meal. The painting, which features borrowed details from several Birds of America plates, signifies the admiration Havell felt for his revered colleague. Audubon undoubtedly returned his affection, as he named a species of Tern after his friend and engraver.

For your consideration in this lot is a framed lithograph of J. Audubon's “Carolina Parrot” that was originally hand-colored plate by Robert Havell (1793-1878). Audubon depicted several species of now-extinct birds in his iconic “Birds of America”, including the Carolina Parrot. He noted that the number of Carolina Parrots was beginning to dwindle even in his time. In “Ornithological Biography” he stated, “Our Parakeets are very rapidly diminishing in number; and in some districts, where twenty-five years ago they were plentiful, scarcely any are now to be seen.... I should think that along the Mississippi there is now not half the number that existed fifteen years ago.” Unfortunately, the vibrant birds were considered a pest by farmers and were killed in large numbers to prevent them from ruining crops. This slaughter, combined with deforestation throughout their range and the popularity of their feathers in the millinery trade, led to the decline of the Parrot. The species was rarely seen outside of Florida after 1860, and by the 1920s it was considered extinct (Cornell Lab of Ornithology)”. This lithograph is in an ornate gilt frame. The print has shifted in the frame. The shown art measures 15 1/2" x 19 1/2" and the frame measures 26" x 22".
