Jonathan Hateley Art for Sale and Sold Prices

b. 1964 -

I have sculpted most of my life, although it was only in recent years that I felt the desire to produce work of my own designs and choosing. Before taking this new path, my career has been varied, challenging and exciting. I completed a degree in graphic design in 1986 where I concentrated on illustration in both two and three dimensions. I moved to London and began sculpting for the theatre, firstly on the 'Phantom of the Opera' production and then for four years at the English National Opera Company. This was followed by many years working to tight deadlines and sculpting just about anything for TV, theatre and film. At this stage I was also illustrating for publishers. Having been through so many of the commercial applications for sculpture, I now find myself with the freedom to realise my own ideas.

Whilst I enjoy using detail and texture in my work, I do so as a means of drawing people into each piece, having presented them with the initial design, shape or study. This design is important to me whatever the sculpture may depict, as I seek to find new ways of interpreting familiar subjects. I find aspects of nature most inspiring, from the human figure to wildlife, but quite often seek to find beauty in unlikely places and enhance the details I find in them. Given such subject matter, my sculptures can be organic or figurative, or a mixture of both. They can have an element of quirkiness, or be spiritual, show movement or poise, but are formed with the intention of them sitting harmoniously with nature.
