Tomoko Hasuwa - Oftentimes, contemporary Japanese art is equated with the hugely influential Superflat movement as coined by Murakami Takashi, or perhaps seen through the lens of kawaii, as evidenced by Nara Yoshitomo’s adorable oeuvre, or perhaps yet, the splendid Pop images created by Kusama Yayoi. The present sale presents a group of young, emerging, and talented Japanese artists who together represent a departure from such larger movements. Collectively, they represent the artistic forms of minimalism, the figurative, surrealism, and even abstraction. These young artists’ works breathe new life into the discourse of contemporary Japanese art, offering their audiences entirely new perspectives on such an established art form.

Born in 1981 Osaka, Tomoko Hasuwa has completed both BA and MA of Fine Arts in Kyoto University of Art in 2006. Since then she has been continuously working in Tokyo, holding several solo exhibitions in some of the most established galleries of the city, including “Super Hero” in Gallery Fukka (2012); “Waiting Room” in Art Waiting Room (2013); and “STOROBO” in Yoyogi Art Gallery (2014). Also most notably, her series of works “EL DORADO” was exhibited in 2014 at Gallery Fukka of Tokyo and Quinta del Sordo in Madrid. Her primary motif, a young girl, is often found in nebulous locales, and this sense of mystery is heightened by the artist’s method of using soft colours and loose contours, which blurs the boundaries between reality and a fantastical, elusive world. Consequently this young artist and her works are celebrated across the globe. Her works were included in several international exhibitions including, “Winter Discoveries” at Lamia In in New York (2004) and “TAKE A CHILL PILL” at La Farmacia in Madrid (2014). Her works were also chosen to be exhibited in “Gunma Biennale for Young Artists 2012” in The Museum of Modern Art, Gunma. She was awarded the Hamamatsu Art Prize in 2010.
