Jalaini Abu Hassan or “Jai” is a contemporary Malaysian artist. His works are inspired by current events, expressed in local and familiar imagery and focused through his personal lens of nostalgia and history. Educated at MARA Institute of Technology (now UiTM), where he obtained his bachelor’s degree. Jai continued his education — under scholarship — at the prestigious institutions of the Slade School of Fine Art in London and Pratt Institute in New York, where he obtained his master’s degree and master of fine art respectively. A process painter, Jai is interested in the exploration of the act of creating a work, the exploration of materials and mediums, and the marks that form a drawing. He is always pushing back the boundaries in search of new processes and working towards presenting a Malaysian visual vernacular, one whose meaning would undoubtedly speak of his identity and culture.

          Est: RM6,000 - RM12,000

Jai is a natural poet, and his paintings tell their own mysticism, poetry, the Malay culture, social commentaries as well as his own biography. This includes Desember Lewat Hujung. Though confusing at first, his works are seamless yet are contrasting in pictorial designs which grabs the attention of viewers, luring them to inspect further. When he reached the sixth form, Jai had decided to pursue his passion for drawing and painting, subsequently enrolling himself at the Mara Institute of Technology (ITM), a fine art educational institution in the country. After his graduation in 1985, at the height of an economic recession, the artist partook in Anak Alam, a haven for Malay artists and poets established by artist-poet Latiff Mohidin in the 1970’s, during which he survived by doing odd jobs. Nonetheless, that year, he won first prize at the National Art Gallery’s Young Contemporaries Art Competition where he won an ASEAN travel grant to Manila and was granted a scholarship to study at The Slade School of Fine Art in London.

He first obtained his BA in Fine Art at the same institution in 1985 when it was then the Mara Institute of Technology. He continued his MA at the Slade School of Fine Art at the University College of London and then proceeded to pursue his Master in Fine Art at the Pratt Institute in New York. He has won awards as an artist while some of his works are in permanent collections in corporations and public art galleries like the Balai Seni Lukis Negara and PETRONAS Gallery. He returned to New York in the spring of 2011 for his first US solo exhibition in over ten years, comprising a new body of mixed media works on canvas and paper. Jai’s exhibition gave American audiences a rare opportunity for an in-depth viewing of the work of one of Malaysia’s leading contemporary artists. The exhibition’s title refers to a form of Malay popular opera (Bangsawan) and the notion of the national (Kebangsaan). Jai’s work infuses references of traditional Malay culture, while actively engaging contemporary developments in Malaysia’s rapidly changing society. Ever since his first solo show in London in 1987, his work has appeared in almost sixty exhibitions in Asia, Australia, Europe, and North America.

          Est: RM1,500 - RM4,500

Entitled Non-Species Botanical II, 2020, this brilliant work departs from Jai’s usual renditions while still preserving his use of vibrant colours. Demure in characteristic, this piece almost looks like the artist’s rendition of a botanical illustration. Against a white paper, Jai depicts a species of plant using a transition of hues, from a greenish-blue to a vibrant red and burgundy. This seamless work grabs the attention of its viewer, calling them to inspect it further
