First Edition cartoon panorama, softcover, each print measuring 140 x 180mm, folded concertina style [cover and first two pages detached], printed by Edmund Evans, Ltd. London, 1915. Summarised on the back cover: "Ye Berlyn Tapestrie" is founded on the famous Bayeux Tapestry which recorded incidents of the Invasion of England by William The Conqueror, A.D. 1066, additional pencil inscription on back cover. Pioneering British illustrator John Hassall responded to the horrors of the First World War with his trademark black humour in this panorama of "Ye Berlyn Tapestrie", a parody of the Bayeux Tapestry which satirises German agression. Thirty illustrated panels, in the style of the Bayeux Tapestry, depicts Kaiser Wilhem II's invasion of Luxembourg and Belgium in comic caricature.

John Hassall (Walmer, 1868 - London, 1948) "Barcelone Sejour d'Hiver" (Winter stay in Barcelona) Original poster made in 1906. 130 x 98,5 cm. Published by "Affiches Barral Hermanos". 94, Paseo de Gracia, Barcelona. It bears the stamp of the "Syndicat d'Initiative" of Barcelona, which, according to the Arxiu històric de la Ciutat de Barcelona (The City of Barcelona’s historic Archive): "With the name of Sociedad de Atracción de Forasteros (Syndicat d'Initiative or Society for Attracting Foreigners) of Barcelona, the organisation was founded on the 1st April 1908, its objective being to promote tourism in Barcelona and the Province of Catalonia. It provided "forasteros" -foreign visitors- information of touristic and cultural interest in Barcelona. The promotors wanted to contribute to the modernisation and cultural and economic enrichment of the city and the country through encouraging tourism." The poster we are auctioning was published, as we can see, in a context in which tourism was beginning to be promoted in the Catalan capital, "as a strategy for transforming Barcelona and, by extension, Catalonia, which has been hit hard since 1898, when, with the loss of the colonies, the large overseas market for its industry also disappeared", as Carles Geli comments in his article for El País "Barcelona, ‘atracción de forasteros’" (Barcelona, 'attracting foreigners'). At that time, the city of Barcelona was "difficult to get to [and] the prices of the few hotels that existed were expensive." Barcelona was far behind the other large European cities such as Paris, London or Berlin, which in 1908 had 900,000, 600,000 and 500,000 visitors respectively, according to Geli’s article, which concludes that, for these reasons, the dominant political party of the time in Catalonia, the "Lliga Regionalista" used tourism "as an arsenal for its regenerationist project, due to the desire for Europeanisation, to jump from being a provincial city [...] to a metropolitan city, capable of combining its nature as an industrial hub with that of a tourist hub". The Biblioteca Nacional de Catalunya (National Library of Catalonia), has an example of this poster in its collection. Bibliographic references: - Arxiu Històric de la Ciutat de Barcelona. Dam, The Shop Girl was one of the new style of Irish musical comedies which burst to popularity at the end of the 19th century. Each of these types of musicals focused on a single girl and her misadventures toward success, society, and love. They were a natural progression out of the era of burlesque and into one of a linear story line and coherent plot, ultimately allowing for the more complex theatrical musicals of the 20th century to be born. As The Poster noted, "... each has the saving merit of simplicity. Both are decorative, without running into intricate and ineffective detail. Nothing could be more charming than the little red-cloaked figure treading her way amongst a crowd of flaunting scarlet poppies, while the wolf from the brow of the bleak hill engages himself in unholy contemplation of her. This bill performs its business of advertising to admiration, and is excellent alike in colour and composition" (December 1898, p. 242). (Art Nouveau; Theatre; Children; Animals; Dogs)

Weill calls him "more original" than Hardy (p. 68). Judging his work in 1901, W.S. Rogers concluded that "Hassall's work is more uniform in its excellence, and is clever in a high degree. He is extremely versatile, and displays a wide range of knowledge in his productions. His figures, his animals, and every accessory that he employs are well drawn, and impress one with the sense that they have been studied from life... His women, if savouring of a single model, are charming in their gaiety of manner, unconventionality of pose, and pert frankness of expression" (p. 34-35). Many of these qualities can be seen in this impressive poster for the Winter City of Barcelona: the beach and sky are drawn measuredly and geometrically, allowing the girl's magnificent dress, hat, and umbrella to suffuse the scene. This is a two-sheet poster. (Art Nouveau; Spain; Travel)
