"Sam Haskin's camera is for making poetry, for telling us what we already know but cannot tell ourselves. These pictures of a lovely girl and her hopeless longing for a man who will never come are an ode to loneliness", reads the foreword to "November Girl". The photo book is divided into seven parts, each dedicated to a day of the week; these consist of the image constellations that are so typical of Haskins, with landscapes and studio nudes placed together both individually and in various montages. The present motif impressively spreads over a full double page in the fourth chapter "Sunday". Als Models beschäftigte er mit Vorliebe Frauen, die nicht im professionellen Betrieb etabliert waren und seiner Kamera in natürlichen Posen selbstbewusst entgegentraten. Unschärfe und Grobkörnigkeit sind essenzielle Gestaltungsmittel seiner Bildästhetik, die er mit Überbelichtung bei der Positiventwicklung seiner Vergrößerungen erreichte. Nachhaltig einflussreich waren seine Fotobücher, wie das 1964 erschienene „Cowboy Kate“, von dem sich über eine Million Exemplare verkauften. Dieses enthält gewagte Montagen aus Aktaufnahmen und Motiven von isolierten Versatzstücken der Western-Romantik, wobei er eine Bildsprache schuf, die der neuen Freizügigkeit der Sixties entsprach. Der vorliegende Print stammt aus der Pentax-Galerie in Tokio. Haskins hatte eine lange Beziehung zu der Kamerafirma, deren Galerie in Tokio mehrere seiner Ausstellungen organisierte. Sam Haskins’ work was equally groundbreaking for graphic designers, filmmakers and photographers. As models, he preferred to employ women who were not established in the professional fashion business and who confronted his camera confidently in natural poses. Blurriness and coarse grain are essential design elements of his visual aesthetics, which he achieved with overexposure during the positive development of his enlargements. His photo books had a lasting influence, as “Cowboy Kate”, published in 1964, which sold over a million copies. This contains venturous montages of various motifs, such as nudes and images of isolated emblems of Wild West romanticism, creating a visual language that corresponded to the new permissiveness of the Sixties. The present print comes from the Pentax Gallery in Tokyo. Haskins had a long relationship with the camera company, their gallery in Tokyo organized several of his exhibitions.
