This is an antique etching print by artist Ernest Haskell (American, 1876-1925). Haskell was an artist and illustrator, internationally famous in his lifetime and remembered for his etchings, as well as engravings, pen-and-ink drawings, lithographs and watercolors. He was a pioneer in the field of theatrical posters. He created many portraits and caricatures of luminaries of the day. During World War I he was commissioned by the United States Army to develop camouflage painting. Haskell's etchings and intaglio prints are considered by critics and scholars to be his most important contribution. This etching features a bucolic landscape titled Live Oak Shadows. Signed in pencil below the plate. The paper is 14 1/4 x 10 1/2". The plate mark is 8 x 5".

Condition A- / B+: minor loss in upper left corner; minor tears and creases in margins; light creases in image; stickers on verso along crease. Hinged to mat at top edge. Paper. Advertising the magazine Truth, this is the first American ski poster, and may well be the earliest ski poster from anywhere in the world. So new was the concept of skiing that contemporary critics didn't even recognize the sport. In 1901, W.S. Rodgers referred to the figure as Haskell's "snow shoe girl." After misidentifying the sport he continued that the image "has charming colour, and attains distinction by reason of its unusual perspective and Japanese-like use of intruding foliage" (A Book of the Poster, by W.S.
