        Ismail Hashim (b. 1940 - 2013) From The Barber Chair Series, 1980s

        Est: RM6,000 - RM12,000

This is a rare hand-tinted gelatin silver print by Malaysian photographer Ismail Hashim. He is one of the few artists who have helped change the public's perception towards photography and elevate the status of photography as a form of fine art in Malaysia. Ismail's works seek to capture the hidden beauty in the simplicity and uniqueness of everyday scenes and objects. Using a form of realism that emphasise in evoking atmospheric recollections in the viewer, Ismail presents his photographs as close to reality as possible without idealising the subject matter. His poignant pictures induce nostalgia in the viewer and prompt contemplation on seemingly mundane imagery that are vanishing and forgotten as a consequence of rapid change. From The Barber Chair Series depicts an old swivelling barber chair within a run-down wooden hut. From the torn calendar in the background, traces of hair at the footrest, to the worn electrical standing fan that majority Malaysians would have come across, Ismail masterfully bridges the viewer's memory of a barber haircut experience to the artist's own personal encounter, presenting a complex layering of time and space. By tinting the lush greeneries peering through the window, Ismail may be alluding to the fact that these ordinary yet significant culture and way of life that define our sense of belonging and identity may be overlooked and taken for granted.

        Ismail Hashim (b. 1940 - 2013) Untitled

        Est: RM4,000 - RM7,000

Ismail Hashim usually captures the precious moments in everyday life through his lens, evoking atmospheric recollections in the viewer. However, this set of three is depicting the aftermath of natural / man-made disaster. Celebrated for his hand-tinted technique, art historian T.K. Sabapathy commented that Ismail Hashim “expanded the medium of photography to encompass themes constructed from observed everyday reality”. He employed the grid format in his work as a mode of presenting a variety of photographs within one assemblage. Such technique serves as “an aesthetic device and a means of storytelling” in the artist's view.Ismail Hashim was the first Malaysian photographer-artist to be given a retrospective exhibition. The honour came from the Penang State Art Gallery which hosted it from November 2 to 30 in 2010. Most of his important and often scathing socio-cultural-environmental commentaries were on display. Ismail was also a passionate academician having taught at a school for the deaf before he joined Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), lecturing on Graphic Design from 1979 to 1995. He returned to teach part-time from 2006 to 2007. It was at USM that he received his BA in Fine Arts in 1972 and he studied for his Masters of Fine Arts (majoring in Graphic Design) at the Washington State University in the United States in 1979. He passed away in a tragic road accident in 2013. Unpack-repack: Archiving & Staging Ismail Hashim (1940-2013) was presented at the National Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur in 2015.

“The best part of photography is the act of taking pictures. The rest is just the externalising of images. Before that happens, the work will have to go through a tug-of-war process with the medium.” – Ismail Hashim The strength of photographic works of Ismail Hashim is the sensitivity and his profound study of the idea of the subject that he wants to address. He has translated ideas and normal subjects in his photographic work, and made it into something profound, moving and larger-than-life, as exhibited in this piece. Ismail Hashim went to Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) to study Fine Arts in 1972 and obtained a Masters in Fine Arts specialising in Graphic Design from Washington State University, USA in 1979. He returned to lecture in the visual arts department of USM and eventually became the dean of the Pusat Seni (Centre of the Arts). A founding member of ALIRAN, a pioneering social justice movement in Malaysia, Ismail designed its logo as well as some of its most iconic magazine covers. As one of Malaysia’s leading artist-photographers, Ismail Hashim helped elevate the status of photography as a form of fine art in Malaysia.
