1846. 36,5 cm x 30,5 cm. Rahmen. Allgemeine Lit.: Knut Soiné: "Johann Peter Hasenclever. Ein Maler im Vormärz", Neustadt/Aisch 1990, Wvz.-Nr. 171f. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated 1846.

Notation: Signed and dated lower right: "Hasenclever 36". Frame: Framed. Verso: Label attached to the frame "Deutsche Jahrhundert-Ausstellung" National-Galerie, Berlin 1906 with provenance indication "Besitz Emilie Eckardt, Halle/Saale". Cf. literature: H. Bestvater-Hasenclever: J.P. Hasenclever - Ein wacher Zeitgenosse des Biedermeier, Recklinghausen 1979, p. 19, fig. 18; St. Geppert and D. Soechting (eds.): Johann Peter Hasenclever (1810-1853). Ein Malerleben zwischen Biedermeier und Revolution, Mainz 2003, p. 129, ill. 49. Provenance: Private ownership, Germany. "Der Nieser" is a work that brought Johann Peter Hasenclever great fame. The artist's first successes were small-format portraits of individual figures with humorous characterisations: In addition to the subject of the present painting, the "Begging Sister", the "Milkmaid" and the "Politician" should be mentioned. The figure depicted becomes the victim of the artist's satirical mockery, who portrays her alone, in a private moment, without the protection of secondary figures who could draw the viewer's attention to her. The present work was exhibited at the German Centennial Exhibition at the National Gallery in Berlin in 1906, with the provenance indication "Property Emilie Eckardt, Halle/Saale". It is probably the same painting that is illustrated in Bestvater-Hasenclever (1979, ill. 18) and Gepper/Soechting (2003, ill. 49) as having been painted in 1836 and presented at the Berlin Academy Exhibition in 1906. At least one other version of this work is known, which was auctioned by VAN HAM on 21st April 2007. The artist repeated successful prototypes several times, which is not surprising as he inserted himself into the grey areas of 19th century morality with unerring ingenuity and veiled humour. Over the last few years, we have successfully offered and sold several works by Johann Peter Hasenclever. With the present painting, VAN HAM once again confirms itself as the reference house for this artist and 19th century German painting. Exhibition Bergisches Museum Schloss Burg an der Wupper, Solingen 04.04.-09.06.2003. cat. no. 112, p. 289f: illustrated and discussed here the version from 1852. Provenance: Private ownership, Germany. A school class that could hardly be imagined any wilder, with a teacher who is overtaxed beyond measure - Johann Peter Hasenclever leads the viewer into a past world that is superficially so clichéd that today, beyond the genre-like narrative, we hardly notice the social criticism that makes the painting a political statement. Nowadays, Hasenclever is (unfortunately) primarily only associated with his humorous social scenes, which cheerfully recount the everyday life of the Biedermeier era. Even though he is regarded as one of the most important personalities not only of the Düsseldorf School of Painting, but also of 19th century German painting as a whole, he has unjustly been somewhat forgotten, despite his great painterly qualities. In addition to his art, he was also politically engaged during the Vormärz period and was active in the democratic movements during the 1848 revolution, which ultimately failed, however. His liberal and bourgeois-democratic views are reflected in his paintings and not least in the school scene from 1852 shown here, which is also known under the title "Lasset die Kindlein zu mir kommen" - a title that is clearly meant satirically. The teacher, obviously overwhelmed by the rowdy and wild schoolboys, is punishing a boy with the cane for breaking a blackboard. At that moment, a new pupil is brought into the class by his father, who carries the school fees in the form of eggs and a rooster. In both of them, their shuddering at the situation, as well as the teacher's helplessness and the other pupils' anger at his educational approach are clearly apparent. This is not the first time that Hasenclever has captured the theme of the first day at school in a painting: there is a known drawing from 1846/47 in which the same situation of introducing a new pupil is depicted. Only here everything is in perfect order, the situation is friendly and trusting. Convinced of the necessity of developing a new educational theory, Hasenclever shows in this pre-Revolutionary drawing a modern and understanding teacher; quite differently in the large painting, in which he humorously depicts the classical schoolmaster of old, and thus what he sees as the retrograde steps of the post-Revolutionary years, during which all educational reforms were reversed. Nevertheless, Hasenclever is and remains the humanist who believes in the good in people: for the light that brings a warm atmosphere to the whole scene comes from the pupils. The painter places his hope in this new generation. Explanations to the Catalogue

JOHANN PETER HASENCLEVER (Germany, 1810-1853) oil on canvas, "Der erste Schultag" (First Day of School) also known by alternate title, "Lassetdie Kinderlein zu mir" (Let the Children Come to Me). Featuring a rural mid-19th century German classroom in chaos and pandemonium. A father holding a basket of egg, a dead rooster, and pushing his son forward to present to an elderly teacher occupied with spanking a screaming child over his knee. The school children are clearly out of the teacher's control with some crying, some hiding, one boy drawing a donkey on the wall, some laughing, one boy with his fist up in anger, and a few students in the background studiously reading and writing. The classroom itself is deteriorating with holes and debris on the floor, chipped and stained plaster, a torn map of Europe, piles of books in disarray, and a violin with broken strings. Signed "J.P. Hasenclever" lower right. Image measures 35" x 44". In a wood frame; 40.5" x 49.5" overall. Provenance: passed down within the family.

Auction announcements 12th June 2014 Lot 43: A painting after Johann Peter Hasenclever. Oil on metal Germany, circa 1850 Johann Peter Hasenclever (1810-1853) - German genre painter Old Label on the verso, "Les amateurs de vin/Hasenclever" Gold-colored stucco frame Overall dimensions, framed: 50 x 58 cm Good condition Provenance: Private collection, Switzerland The painter shows his artistic skills in the accomplished drawing and balanced composition. Paintings of similar size sell for up to 25,000 euros on the international auction market The present painting is a late work by the German genre painter Johann Peter Hasenclever, and shows a group of seven gentlemen with a wine server in a wine cellar. It is a recurring subject in Hasenclever's oeuvre. Gottfried Keller once called him the 'court painter of wine, urbanity and humor'. Other contemporaries described him as a 'wine-loving humorist' and 'warm-hearted portrayer of sociable interior scenes'. The present composition is characterized by his typical golden lighting and a wealth of detail. The painting is in good condition. The metal plate is well preserved. The thickness of the varnish hinders the inspection with ultraviolet light. A few tiny spots of restoration are visible to the surface as well as light lines of retouching to the edges. The fine details appear still in very good order. The gold-colored wood frame is in good condition with a chip to the upper edge. The overall dimensions, framed, are 50 x 58 cm. The metal plate measures 34.5 x 43 cm. Johann Peter Hasenclever (1810-1853) Johann Peter Hasenclever is considered one of Germany's most important genre painters of the 19th century. He influenced important artists such as Carl Spitzweg and Wilhelm Busch. Hasenclever was born in Remscheid and studied at the Düsseldorf Academy under Wilhelm von Schadow. Study visits took him to Munich and Italy. After 1842, he settled in Düsseldorf. Hasenclever's paintings often show humorous and social critical subjects. He became known, for example, for his series of works illustrating Carl Arnold Kortum's satirical hero story 'Life, Opinions, and Deeds of Hieronymus Jobs', including the painting 'The Examination', which was acquired in 1840 by the Bavarian King Ludwig I. Hasenclever was also a successful portrait painter. Today, works by Hasenclever are on display in major museum collections, including the Neue Pinakothek in Munich, the Museum Kunst Palast, Düsseldorf, the Wallraf-Richartz Museum in Cologne, the Alte Nationalgalerie Berlin, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Leipzig.
