Numbered in pencil 28/160 bottom left. Depicts an abstract representation of a city in heavily red hues. Depth: 1 1/2 in. Overall size: 29 X 33 1/2 in. Sight size: 20 1/2 X 25 in. #1532 . Shoichi Hasegawa was born in 1929 in Yaizu, Japan. Interested early on in painting and engraving, the young artist was immersed in ancient Japanese tradition while studying under Yoshinari Koga right after World War II. After moving to Tokyo to study under the watercolorist Tasuku Kasukabe, he was encouraged by the Surrealist painter Kawaguchi Kigau to move to Paris, France in 1961. Discovering the techniques of etching in color pioneered at Atelier 17, he expanded beyond classical aquatint processes to develop his own form using varnishes and acids. Drawing on his active spiritual life and his exposure to the dichotomy between traditional and modern forms, he sought to be a bridge between the Eastern and Western schools of art. Today, his paintings are housed in permanent exhibitions at the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Museum Fuji in Tokyo. He also served as professor at Musashino University of Fine Arts. Hasegawa died in Val-d’Oise, France in 2023. Location BE
