Lucy Harwood (British, 1893-1972) Oil Painting

      Est: $800 - $1,200

Lucy Harwood (British, 1893-1972) Painting. Title - Colorful Floral Still Life. Oil on canvas painting. Unsigned. Labeled on the back of the frame, Lucy Harwood - Cat No. 7. Painting measures 20.2 inches high, 24 inches wide. Frame measures 31 inches high, 27 inches wide. In good condition. From colchesterartsociety.co.uk: E. Lucy Harwood (1893-1972) was born on New Year’s Day at Belstead Park near Ipswich into a wealthy family of yeoman ancestry. Shortly after her birth her family moved to Ackworth House, East Bergholt, where they lived until the death of her father. As a teenage girl Lucy had shown outstanding musical ability and planned to become a professional pianist but a failed operation paralyzed her right side, obliging her to abandon her musical ambitions. After studying fine art she attended classes at the Slade, showed a talent for drawing and after the death of her mother in 1938, moved to Octagon House, Dedham, becoming, at the age of 45, one of the first students at the East Anglian School of Drawing and Painting set up by Cedric Morris (q.v.) and Arthur Lett-Haines (q.v.). Influenced by Cedric Morris and Post-Impressionism, she painted landscapes and portraits of her fellow students and village neighbours, keeping a daily journal and every Sunday at 4.30 served a formal tea for her friends with buns, bread and jam. When in 1940 the School accidentally burned down and moved to The Pound in Higham and later to Benton End Lucy bought a house in the nearby village of Upper Layham where she lived until her death. Here she became an institution and Maggi Hambling, a former student, recalls how people maintained a respectful distance both from her paint-splattered car and the lethal port wine she served to visitors. Regarded as an eccentric Lucy, never married and was able to devote herself to the community and her art, taking pleasure in seeing her paintings hanging in neighbours’ cottages. She became one of the early members of the Colchester Art Society, exhibiting Still Life with Chrysanthemums and Layham Landscape at the first exhibition of 1946. Describing herself as a dedicated Post-Impressionist, she developed a great love for the countryside and felt an affinity with van Gogh and Gauguin, among others, but also retained a passionate pictorial independence, evolving a style of great delicacy and detail, with a bold palette and flamboyant impasto. In later life her spontaneous style and unique colour sense won her approval from Cedric Morris, Augustus John and Matthew Smith, according to Lett-Haines who wrote the introduction to her commemorative exhibition at the Minories in 1985. Her debt to Cedric Morris in this particular work appears in the large brush strokes, colours and straightforward delineation of spring flowers.

Paint layer appears generally stable with no flaking of cleavage. Some very minute pinholes in the canvas at each corner and at the top and bottom edges, likely done by the artist during execution. Canvas is in plane, but tension perhaps slightly slack. Would benefit from a clean, but generally in sound condition.

*Lucy Harwood (1893-1972)PORTRAIT OF BOD (ELIZABETH BODMAN), c.1947Inscribed verso, oil on canvas61 x 51cm, unframedLucy Harwood was born at Belstead Hall, near Ipswich, later moving to Ackworth House in East Bergholt. She studied at The Slade, however, following an appendix operation, suffered a stroke, and was partially paralysed, but nevertheless overcame this and learnt to draw. In 1937, she enrolled at The East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing, where she leant to paint. In 1940, she moved nearby to Kiln House in Upper Layham, the garden of which is depicted in a number of pictures in this sale. She always dressed vibrantly, having a strong sense of colour; to many she was Benton End's Ottoline Morrell. She had solo exhibitions at The Minories and posthumously at The Sally Hunter Gallery in Motcomb Street, London.*Artist's Resale Right may apply to this lot.

Shortly after her birth the family moved to Ackworth House, East Bergholt. Before the First World War she attended classes at the Slade. In 1937 she met Cedric Morris, in the year that he opened the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing at Dedham. Lucy became one of his first students. In the introduction to the catalogue of the Lucy Harwood Commemorative Exhibition, at The Minories, Colchester, in 1975, Lett Haines wrote that Lucy Harwood's drawing style was one "approved by Cedric Morris, Augustus John and Matthew Smith. In her work she was a complete individualist and incapable of being influenced".
