Provenance: Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 5 March 1976, lot 79.Private collection.Anon. sale, Sotheby's, London, 23 May, 2013, lot 35.Private collection, UK. Literature: Kenneth McConkey et al, Harold Harvey, Painter of Cornwall, Clifton, 2001, p. 155, no. 367.During the 1920s, Harold Harvey painted a number of studies of women working in the fields, such as The Flower Gatherers (1925), Iris Gatherers (1925), Iris pickers (1926, sold in these rooms 2 March 2016, lot 92) and The Bracken Carriers (1927). The present lot is most closely related to The Donkey Meadow (1924), which featured on the cover of the monogram on Harold Harvey published in 2001 to coincide with the major exhibition of Harvey's work at Penlee House Museum and Gallery, Penzance. Caroline Fox notes that Harvey's 'best work expresses a true joy in the countryside and a real understanding of the movements and gestures of the men, women and children he so often depicted' 1, an observation that is brilliantly demonstrated in the present lot. By contrast to the close-up perspective of Iris pickers, where there is no horizon to distract from the field of flowers, here, as with The Donkey Meadow, Harvey draws out his composition, showing the coastal town of Penzance beyond, with the patchwork of fields beyond the town harmonising with the colours of the tulips that the women are crouching to collect. The present lot is listed in Peter Risdon's online catalogue of Harold Harvey's work, www.haroldharvey.info. 1 Caroline Fox, Stanhope Forbes and the Newlyn School, Newton Abbot, 1997, p. 75.

    • Harold Harvey (British, 1874-1941) Sandy Bay
      Feb. 20, 2019

Harold Harvey (British, 1874-1941) Sandy Bay

      Est: £8,000 - £12,000

Harold Harvey (British, 1874-1941) Sandy Bay signed 'Harold Harvey' (lower left)oil on canvas30.5 x 40.6cm (12 x 16in). Harold Harvey was an artist whose career straddled the first two generations of Newlyn School painters. Born in Penzance, Harvey spent his entire life based in Cornwall, and he would have grown up witnessing the growth of an artistic community, as Walter Langley, Stanhope Forbes and many others, invigorated with the principle of living among their subjects, and painting them in a natural setting, began to move to Newlyn, a tiny fishing village adjacent to Penzance. Harvey studied under Norman Garstin at the Penzance School of Art. An Irish-born artist who settled in Cornwall, Gartsin was, like many of his contemporaries, hugely influenced by Bastien-Lepage, a painter who typified the principles of realism, working en plein air, and living within the communities where he was working. The young Harvey then travelled to Paris, where like Thomas Cooper Gotch and Henry Scott Tuke, he studied under Benjamin Constant and Jean-Paul Laurens at the Academie Julian. Returning to the family home in Penzance, and later settling in Newlyn, Harvey's first exhibited work was at the inaugural exhibition of the Passmore Edwards Art Gallery in 1896, where he would have hung alongside the likes of Forbes, Langley and Garstin. Two years later, Harvey had his first work exhibited at the Royal Academy (In a Cornish cottage, 1898, no. 44). He continued to exhibit at the RA until his death, as well as at Institutes and Academies in Birmingham, Liverpool, Glasgow and elsewhere. He also held several one-man exhibitions in London, at the Mendoza Galleries, Barbizon House and the Leicester Galleries. Harvey's output was prolific and his style was sensitive to the changing styles of the Newlyn artistic community. In his early work we see his palette and his choice of subject very influenced by Forbes; in later years we see the influence of artists such as Laura Knight, with a greater use of bright colours, and later still we see a much broader range of subjects, and a style reminiscent of painters such as Dod Procter. As the author of an article published in Colour magazine in 1920 notes, we can identify 'certain successive phases in which different influences are traceable in turn. Starting out with a purely naturalistic realism, of which Bastien-Lepage was, via Stanhope Forbes, the inspirer, he in common with the other members of the younger Newlyn generation passes through a stage of pre-Raphaelite and then primitive Italian realism, which is 'natural' only by a stretching of the term, to rest a while at present on the borders of 'expressionism', in which he, whilst preserving naturalism and realism in subject matter, simplifies beyond optical, i.e. photographic accuracy'.1The present lot is consistent with the first 'phase' of Harvey's work, where his subjects are dominated by the harbours, fishing vessels and the fisherfolk of West Cornwall. The location has been identified as Sandy Bay, between Newlyn and Mousehole in West Cornwall. Peter Risdon has suggested that the work was painted circa 1900-1910.We are grateful to Peter Risdon for his assistance in cataloguing this lot. The present lot is listed in his online catalogue of Harold Harvey's work, www.haroldharvey.info. 1 Colour, October 1920, pp. 48-54, quoted in McKonkey et al, Harold Harvey, Painter of Cornwall, Falmouth, 2001, pp. 93-95.

ProvenancePrivate collection, UK (reputedly gifted by the artist).Property of a deceased's estate.ExhibitedLondon, Barbizon House, 1932.LiteratureMcConkey, Risdon et al, Harold Harvey, Painter of Cornwall, Clifton, 2001, no. 274, p. 149.Harvey revisited the theme of children resting on the beach numerous times throughout his career. In 1917 he painted a work titled On the beach at Newlyn (sold Phillips, 12 November 1958, lot 98). In this work, children similar to the present lot, also surround a fire, perhaps boiling winkles, with Penzance shimmering in the distance. Another work, painted a year earlier, titled Children on the surf depicts a girl with fair hair and white dress on rocks beside the sea; to the left two girls sit close to the sea, the waves foaming on the rocks. In 1928, Harvey painted a similar scene, also titled On the Sands (sold Sotheby's 13 May 1987, lot 130). A more worked composition, two girls lie full length on a yellow sandy beach, with sparkling sea and cliffs beyond. All of Harvey's seaside views, including the present lot, successfully transport the viewer into a haven of warmth, restfulness and peace.Harvey's solo exhibition at Barbizon House in 1932 received positive reviews. Notably, The Times reviewed it on the 5 February and observed 'Mr Harvey appears to be a perfectly logical development from the Newlyn School of Mr Stanhope Forbes, RA, with the brighter and more decoratively considered colour and the more deliberately plastic ambitions which belong to the present day.' In addition, a letter from George Clausen (dated 13 February 1932) said 'We saw your show this morning and were quite charmed with it ! ...the clean fresh colour and honest outlook are so refreshing'. Barbizon House was founded in 1918 at 8 Henrietta Street and ran until 1938. Harvey's exhibition probably toured to Frost & Reed at Clare Street, Bristol in September-October of the same year. We are grateful to Peter Risdon for his assistance in cataloguing this lot.

Footnotes Provenance Private collection, Italy The present work bears close comparison with several works that Harvey produced in the early 1920s. Marazion Marsh (1923) is very similar in composition, subject and treatment, and the present work may also depict the same marshes. Harvey also painted a work entitled Marazion Marshes, which is known from an exhibition of 1922, but a slightly smaller size at 30 x 25 inches. Another work which is stylistically comparable is Chy an Mor (1922), also known as Near Zennor which again depicts a scrubby pastoral landscape with distant farm buildings. We are grateful to Peter Risdon for his assistance in cataloguing this lot. The work will appear in his online catalogue, www.haroldharvey.info.
