          Oct. 29, 2024

Andre Harvey (American, 1941 - 2018), First Light, Bronze

          Est: $2,000 - $4,000

Property from a Private Collection, Savannah, GA Description: Andre Harvey (American, 1941 - 2018), First Light, Bronze Sculpture, signed on lower edge of hive, and signed, titled, dated 1994, and inscribed 'Rockland, Delaware, Cast: Tallix Beacon, NY, and Larry Paul, Phila., PA, Bronze: No. 56 of 60' on back, a realistic cast bronze sculpture of a large bee hive on a branch, with hanging mount at back. AndrŽ Harvey (1941 - 2018) was an American sculptor whose realistic and contemporary works are primarily cast in bronze using the lost wax method. Harvey also worked in granite, made collages, painted (watercolors), and produced intricate sculptural jewelry cast in 18K and 22K gold. He worked in the Brandywine Valley, in Rockland, just north of Wilmington, Delaware. AndrŽ Harvey graduated from the University of Virginia in 1963. In 1969, after working both as a journalist and an educator, he and his wife, Bobbie quit their jobs in search of a life change and traveled through Europe and Morocco. During this period, Harvey met and worked with abstract sculptor Michel Anasse, in Vallauris, France, which resulted in his focus on sculpture as a career. Once back in the U.S., Harvey began creating small and large-scale realistic sculptures inspired by his childhood growing up in rural Pocopson, near Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. Harvey_s first high-profile exposure was the exhibition of five sculptures for the five windows at Tiffany & Company, New York. Since that time, in a career spanning over four decades, Harvey produced an extensive volume of work which was purchased by numerous public and private collections, and featured in exhibitions both nationally and internationally. Notes: A primarily self-taught artist, Harvey was inspired by an abstract sculpture he saw in a gallery window while on a trip to France. Once back home, he convinced a local artisan to teach him the rudiments of welding and later worked as an unpaid apprentice in the studio of the Delaware sculptor Charles Parks (1922-2012). Harvey soon began to produce bronze works, utilizing the time-consuming lost wax technique, which allowed for the high level of detail and precision for which his sculptures are so well-known.

André Harvey (American/Delaware, b. 1941),"Rain Before Morning (Tree Frogs)", 1985, bronze with brown and green polychrome patina, signature inscribed twice and "Tallix Foundry, Peekskill, N.Y." foundry mark on lower branch, numbered "40/60" on underside of branch and under base, h. 14 1/4 in., w. 13 1/4 in., d. 5 1/2 in., oval walnut Mervin B. Martin base, overall h. 15 1/4 in. Note: Chancing upon a welding and pottery studio in Vallauris, France, a young André Harvey decided to apprentice with the sculptor and learn welding, beginning his career as an artist. Harvey’s background in welding has often been put to use in his sculptures. Describing the process of creating the delicate tree frogs offered here, Harvey writes, “The hardest problem was sculpting the small hands and feet…I ended up making them out of welded steel using a jeweler’s torch.” This meticulous attention to detail is displayed not only in the tree frogs’ rendering, but throughout Harvey’s entire body of work. The realism and careful depiction of Harvey’s animals create a beautiful naturalism.
