A nice ensemble of items, includes an S.P., 3.75 x 5.25 in. b/w, showing the ace in the cockpit of his fighter, double matted with a 1939 Iron Cross, 2nd Class with ribbon (not examined out of frame, as is). All set into a black steel frame. Very good.

        ERICH HARTMANN

        ERICH HARTMANN (1922-1993) German fighter pilot ace, the most successful fighter pilot in history, recipient of Knights Cross with Oak Leaves, Sword and Diamonds, commander in the West German air force in the post war era. Great S.P., 4.5 x 4 in., b/w, depicting Hartmann posing in uniform at Hitler's Berghof with three fellow pilots, including WALTER KRUPINSKI, GERHARD BACKHORN, and JOHANNES WIESE. Each man has also signed over their respective image. Fine condition. The four men were summoned to the Berghof in March of 1944 to be honored with Iron Cross awards on account of their spectacular aerial victories. By Hartmann's account, the four men got drunk on cognac and champagne, and upon Hitler's arrival they were severely reprimanded by one of his adjutants.

A 45-page (each 9 x 7”) catalogue layout that depicts the artists long-term project showing the human work that was involved cross-culturally in the production and consumption of bread, consisting of printed text and black & white photographs (120 total) on glossy paper, individually housed in page protectors (few paginated by hand) and stored in a contemporary three-ring binder. Light separation to front hinge; a fine example from a Magnum Photos member.
