James Harris Hartman American, (b. 1950) Crow Canyon diptych, 2001 oil on board One (right) signed, dated, and titled verso. From the estate of Keith Little, Indianapolis, IN. Biography from the artist's website: California painter James Harris Hartman was born tenth of eleven children in St. Louis, Missouri in 1950. He studied art at Meramec College. Hartman then went on to become an Art Director for a publishing company for 14 years, assisting in the design of a range of publications. Before moving to California in 1983, Hartman lived in the Netherlands for over a year, where the work of the Dutch masters and the colorful environs of the landscape inspired him. His work in the San Francisco Bay Area included murals and specialty paint finishes for a variety of clients. Living in the Bay Area provided Hartman with opportunities to further his studies in fine art at the San Francisco Art Institute and Stanford University. In the early 1990's James began to paint in earnest, mostly in the plein air style. In his work he searches for essential forms in nature while expressing a personal response. For over ten years James painted outdoors and from the model with Terry St. John and Henry Brandon, former students of James Weeks and Richard Diebenkorn. He lists among his influences Bonnard, the Society of Six and the Bay Area Figurative Painters. Hartman has participated in numerous shows locally and nationally and his work is included in collections both private and corporate internationally.
