      C. Bertram Hartman (American, 1882-1960)

      Est: $3,000 - $4,000

      C. Bertram Hartman (American, 1882-1960) "Flight into Egypt," oil on canvas, circa 1913-14, signed; verso bears artist's paper label. Framed. Size: 30'' x 24'', 76 x 61 cm (stretcher); 34.5'' x 28.25'', 88 x 72 cm (frame). Provenance: Saugerties Antique Gallery; Collection of Dr. Christine I. Oaklander. Treated by Tom Yost Conservation. Hartman was a prominent member of the circle of early American modernist artists active in New York City not associated with Alfred Stieglitz or the Arensbergs. He exhibited with the modernist group The Penguin and at the Whitney Museum, Carnegie Institute, and Art Institute of Chicago. His work from the 1910s was influenced by European Symbolism that he encountered during studies in Paris and Germany. Hartman was distinguished for his sense of Art Deco/Cubist design, which he expressed in textiles including batik and hooked rugs. He shares stylistic tendencies with Hunt Diederich. This spiritualist/Symbolic painting is part of a group of narrative/surreal/symbolic paintings by Hartman from the 1910's probably made shortly after his return from Europe. These paintings have simplified decorative forms and appear to illustrate texts, though the publications are unknown.
