      • Unmounted Hart stereos of CPRR construction

Unmounted Hart stereos of CPRR construction

        Est: $2,000 - $3,000

Heading: Author: Hart, Alfred A. Title: Four original unmounted stereoview albumen photographs by Alfred A. Hart of construction of the Central Pacific Railroad, each with double image Place Published: No place Publisher: Date Published: c.1866-69 Description: 4 unmounted stereo photographs, each approx. 10x21.5 cm (4x8½”). Rare set of four unmounted stereoviews by Alfred A. Hart, the official photographer recording the construction of the Central Pacific Railroad before being superseded by Carleton Watkins in 1869 (Watkins ”inherited” Hart‘s negatives and published them under his own name as well as the photographs he took himself). The present unmounted images were undoubtedly printed by the photographer Frank Durgan, who was given access to Hart‘s negatives, which were under the control of Hart‘s employers, the CPRR. A number of Hart‘s stereoviews on mounts with Durgan‘s imprint are extant. These unmounted views were acquired from an antique dealer who bought them at an estate sale in Lewiston, Maine. Durgan relocated to Lewiston sometime after 1870, opening up a photography studio, and selling stereoviews made from the Hart negatives. It seems evident that these images were printed by Durgan in California when he had use of the negatives, and taken east by him when he traveled to Maine. On the back of each is a penciled number, which look of the period, and these numbers correspond to the negative numbers of the images reproduced in Mead Kibbey‘s important study, ”The Railroad Photographs of Alfred A. Hart, Artist,” published by the California State Library Foundation, 1996. The unmounted images, however, extend farther that those reproduced in the book, which are of the actual cards for which the images were trimmed down. We have not encountered any other unmounted examples of Hart stereoviews (other than four we sold in 2021 which came from the same source as these), though there are some at the Society of California Pioneers that were printed sometime later by Charles Turrill from negatives possessed of Carleton Watkins. The images include: 29. Trestle in Clipper Ravine, near Clipper Gap. 92. Heath‘s Ravine Bank. 80 feet high. 82 miles froom Sacramento. 251. Upper Cascade Bridge, above Cisco. 258. Castle Peak, from Railroad, above Donner Lake.
