Footnotes Born in Philidelphia, Thomas Alexander Harrison spent most of his working life in France. In 1879, he moved to Paris, where he attended the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts under such luminaries as Jules Bastien-Lepage. Like many of his contemporaries, Harrison was drawn to the coastal towns and beaches of Brittany, working at Pont-Aven and Concarneau, where his early work included Castles in Spain (1882, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York), a figurative work which clearly demonstrates the influence of Bastien-Lepage's naturalism. He also produced a series of sparkling wave scenes, perhaps the most famous of which, The Wave (1885) now hangs at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.

Harrison FROM THE JEAN AND GRAHAM DEVOE WILLIFORD CHARITABLE TRUST PROVENANCE: Sotheby's, New York, April 23, 1998, lot 32. EXHIBITED: Champs de Mars Salon, Paris, 1896; The Carnegie International Exhibition, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, 1896; The Annual Exhibition of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1896-7, no. 124; Private apartments of Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany, in 1898; Federal Reserve Board, Washington, D.C., "Highlights and Footnotes of American Art from the Collection of Graham WIlliford," January 22-March 15, 1991. LITERATURE: J. B. Waterbury, "Paris Letter," Brooklyn Life [New York], May 23, 1896, p. 10. San Francisco Call, Vol. 84, No. 166, November 13, 1898, mentions Le Grand Miroir hanging in the personal apartments of William II of Germany. This majestic seascape is the painting which both launched and secured Alexander Harrison's reputation as one of the finest sea painters of his day. In a review following the painting's enthusiastic reception at the 1896 Champs de Mars exhibition in Paris, Jennie Bullard Waterbury penned an effusive appreciation of it, mirroring the general sentiment, and using its faithfulness to nature to make a dig at the Impressionists: "Alexander Harrison's Grand Miroir is a remarkable study of the sea at low tide, 'remarkable' even for Alexander Harrison. The little ripples curve and curl and caress and lap and lip the sand after the fashion of live nature's little waves; and the sea is opalined and dimpled, and mutinous and softly treacherous like the genuine sea. The work is legitimate, without a hint of virtuosity or flourish. Just the sea we know. Who cares for any other sea? The sea of the impressionists, for instance, wherein the waves look like crepe-lisse ruching, with a cream-colored embroidery on the edge. When we onlookers desire ruching, we can buy it; but when we want sea, the next best way to get it, if we do not find it convenient to go to the sea shore, is to study it apres Alexander Harrison." Philadelphia-born artist Thomas Alexander Harrison spent most of his career in France where he specialized in painting the sea and won many awards for his work in international exhibitions. Some of his most beautiful paintings are nocturnes, where he studied the effects of moonlight on water. Harrison studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts before moving to Paris in 1878 to study at the École des Beaux-Arts with Gerome and Bastien-Lepage. Chafing under the restraints of the schools, he traveled to Breton, where at Pont-Aven and Concarneau he turned his attention to marine painting and landscape. Harrison rented a ramshackle cottage near the Brittany town of Beg-Meil, and each evening raced to the dunes to watch the sun set over the ocean. Late in the summer of 1896, he was joined there by struggling writer Marcel Proust and composer Reynaldo Hahn. He opened their eyes to how light plays on water: "We have seen the sea successively turn blood red, purple, nacreous with silver, gold, white, emerald green, and yesterday we were dazzled by an entirely pink sea specked with blue sails." (Hahn to Marie Nordlinger, quoted in William C. Carter, Marcel Proust, A Life (New Haven, 2000), p. 197.) Hahn is considered the inspiration for the title character in Proust's attempted first novel Jean Santeuil, but another character, "C", seems to be based on Harrison, along with aspects of the character Elstir, the painter in Remembrance of Things Past.

Meta: painting, art Artist Biography: Painter Thomas Alexander Harrison was noted as a painter of horizontal wave seascapes, nocturnal* beach scenes, bathing and clothed female figures, plein-aire pastoral landscapes and children on beaches. Harrison, whose brother Birge Harrison, also became a successful artist, was born and raised in Philadelphia, where the family lived in Germantown.Much of his work was inspired by an intrinsic love of the sea and the vastness of nature, space and the sky he observed during his six year experience, 1872-1877, surveying the shores of New England, Florida and Pacific Coast for the United States Coastal and Geodetic Survey. Harrison's formal study of art was delayed by this employment, although in 1872, he had studied briefly at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts* before joining the Survey. In 1877 in Seattle, he left his survey job and traveled San Francisco where he enrolled for a year and a half at the San Francisco School of Design*. He left for Paris in the spring of 1879, and made his primary home there, returning occasionally to the United States. In Paris, he enrolled at the Ecole des Beaux Arts* as a student of academic* painter Jean Leon Gerome and exhibited in the 1881 Paris Salon*. Also in 1881, he began a friendship with Jules Bastien-Lepage, who introduced Harrison to painting en plein-aire*. Soon Harrison became the acknowledged leader of the artists' colony at Pont Aven in Brittany.Harrison was a charter member in 1890 of a new Salon established by Jean-Louis Meissonier, where he exhibited on a regular basis and served as a juror for their exhibitions. In 1885, Harrison's painting, In Arcadia, was purchased by the French government, and "he moved to the forefront among artists who were investigating bright outdoor light and the relationship of figures to landscape. At the same time, he began his long series of marine subjects, predominantly nocturnal beach scenes." (Davis, 250) In 1885, he was elected to the prestigious Society of American Artists* in New York, but was not elected until 1898 later to the National Academy of Design*, likely because of his residency in France. At the time of this election, he had a lengthy stay in the U.S. In later years, he taught winter classes in Paris and spent time in New Hope, Pennsylvania. He also traveled to North Africa. He maintained memberships in other American arts organizations such as the Philadelphia Watercolor Club, Art Club of Philadelphia and Century Association* of New York City. He also belonged to the Paris Society of Arts and Crafts.Harrison exhibited in the United States at the National Academy of Design*, Carnegie Institute*, Society of American Artists, and Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. In 1913, he and his brother Birge Harrison were hosted with an exhibition by the City Art Museum of Saint Louis.Harrison's work is in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago; Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City; Musee d'Orsay, Paris; Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia; and the Royal Gallery, Dresden.Thomas Alexander Harrison died in 1930. A writer for The New York Times termed him the "dean of American painters in Paris."
