BIO: Harris emigrated from England settled in Los Angeles. He started painting from a very early age and continued to develop his artistry in Los Angeles where he studied under notable artists such as Edgar Payne & Hanson Puthuff. Harris produced commercial art as well as non-commercial artwork and taught Art throughout his life. He won numerous awards and his works were exhibited in galleries & museums particularly in S. A 1903 letter of recommendation from Andre & Sleigh, stated that, "We have the pleasure in stating that Samuel Harris (aged 14 ? years) has given every satisfaction during the 8 or 9 months he has been engaged in our Artists Department." After moving to California with his family Harris got a job as painter of signs, billboards and hand-lettered show cards in 1906. He developed a reputation for doing excellent commercial work and opened his own commercial art studio by 1914. His commercial art business received a boost in 1920 when he was hired by the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway Company to work on their poster advertising. He was later hired to do artwork Southern Pacific Railways as well. He began studying painting with Hanson Puthuff in 1906, and continued studying throughout much of his life. As early as 1920 he was exhibiting with the California Art Club. He continued exhibiting his paintings for the next fifty plus years including with the Painters and Sculptors of Southern California, the Pacific Advertising Club Association (1929), the San Gabriel Artists Guild, the Laguna Beach Art Association and many other venues. He won countless awards in hundreds of exhibitions throughout Southern and Northern California. Sam Hyde Harris was "Highly recognizable because of his six-foot-three stature and cigar." He "was known for his jovial personality and his love for his adopted California and her landscape." He preferred painting en plein air to the studio. He loved the outdoors. Harris's paintings employ a progressive composition, pushing the viewers eye to an unexpected place. He taught art classes at the Chouinard School of Art (1935) and for many Clubs and Groups. He met and married Marion Dodge in 1945. They moved to Alhambra in 1946. He bought Jack Wilkinson Smith's "Artists' Alley" studio on Champion Place in 1950. He loved looking at the San Gabriel Mountains from his Champion Place studio.

Samuel Hyde Harris (1889 - 1977) Desert Landscape Oil on Board. Signed on lower left, estate stamped on reverse by Maureen St. Gaudens. Born in Brentford, Middlesex, England, Samuel Hyde Harris became a California impressionist landscape painter. Harris won over 100 awards during his career, which he began as an illustrator. He came to the United States in 1904 and settled in Los Angeles where he studied at the local Art Students League and Cannon Art Schools with Hanson Puthuff, F. Tolles Chamberlin and Stanton MacDonald-Wright. For many years he taught art privately and at the Chouinard Art School. He worked as an illustrator including posters of the Southwest for the Santa Fe Railroad. In the 1920s and 30s, he and Hanson Puthuff went on many painting trips into Arizona and California. In 1950 until the end of his life in 1977, he lived in Alhambra, where he had purchased Jack Wilkinson Smith's studio. SAM HYDE HARRIS (1889-1977) TWO DAYLIGHTS DAILY! SOUTHERN PACIFIC [TO LOS ANGELES / TO SAN FRANCISCO.] Two posters. Circa 1938. Each approximately 22x16 inches, 55 3/4x40 3/4 cm. Condition varies. Paper. One matted and framed. Southern Pacific began operating its streamlined train service, Daylight, between San Francisco and Los Angeles in 1937. The route was so popular (the trains were frequently referred to as "the most beautiful trains in the world") that by 1940 they were running twice a day. The Morning Daylight and the Noon Daylight. It wasn't until the middle of 1938 that Southern Pacific began offering their $6 one-way fare. Initially it had cost $9.47 for the same ticket, but the railroad had to lower the price in the face of competition from the Santa Fe Railroad, which offered cheaper tickets on the same route. Includes the posters advertising each direction.
