WAG’s members include several well-known Malaysian painters, including Patrick Ng Kah Onn, Syed Ahmad Jamal, Dzulkifli Buyong, Cheong Lai Tong and Dr Jolly Koh. He left Malaya in 1960 and the National Painting Hall organized his first retrospective exhibition. In 1962, he was invited to return to this country to supervise arts education in Sabah.

Christian allusions abound in this mock William Blake-inspired Romantic arcadian idyll of overhanging buds with a gnome in flower, done with typical British humour. There is a double play on opposite banks with a pair of unclothed figures on the far side obviously bored with doing nothing, Adam and Eve?, and on the near side, two donkeys one towering over the other linking birth and death? The one on all fours seems to be braying over some obscure triumph, while the one lying on its back isn’t really at a disadvantage. The lowly donkeys, known for carrying Christ into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday and baby Christ (in womb of Mother Mary) to Bethlehem, are strapped with some skimpy outfit. G.K. Chesterton paid tribute to the dumb donkey in his poem, The Donkey. Peter Harris, dubbed the ‘White Tiger’, is best known for creating a semblance of art education as art superintendent of the Federation of Malaya from 1951 to December 1960. Peter Harris (b. England, 1923 - d. 2009) Samat, 1958

        Est: RM6,000 - RM10,000

Samat is local art folklore, for whom the pioneering Malaysian art promoter and collector Frank Sullivan set up a gallery in his (Samat’s) name. Most had only heard of Samat, few had seen him, until Yeoh Jin Leng helped GaleriWan organise the WAG (Wednesday Art Group) – Then And Now exhibition in 1996, when this painting was shown among Peter Harris’ early works. Peter Harris was the Art Superintendent of Malaya from 1951 to 1960 and the founder of the WAG in the 1950s. Sturdy built and handsome, Samat was Frank Sullivan’s gallery partner, although Sullivan ran the show. When Samat allegedly absconded with the gallery’s funds, Sullivan and other partners were not only saddled with the financial repercussions but he also reportedly helped support his (Samat’s) family. This portrait reveals a more studious study in watercolours than Peter Harris’ quick strokes when sketching pastels. It is arguably the only portrait of Samat. Dubbed the ‘White Tiger’, Peter Harris is best known for his setting-up the art coterie, Wednesday Art Group (WAG), which was active between 1952 to 1960. He was given a Retrospective in October-November 1997 by The Art Gallery Penang – his second after his 1960 Retrospective given by the National Art Gallery. In 2001, The Art Gallery Penang also organised a large Tribute exhibition for him. Peter Harris studied at the West of England College of Art in 1939, and taught at the Arts and Crafts Faculty in the College Art School in Swindon in 1947. Back in England, he was head of the Creative Arts Faculty at the Sheldon School in Chippenham until 1976, and was awarded a MBE by Queen Elizabeth II. He recovered from cancer in 1993 after a three-month treatment. He was made Art Superintendent of the then Malaya from 1951 to 1960, and the Sabah Teachers Training College (later Gaya College) in Jesselton (now Kota Kinabalu), from 1962 to 1967.

Chewing bettlenut is common habit in the old days. It’s very rare to see it in the modern days. In fact it’s a forgotten tradition in some cultures. People consume bettlenut as an energy booster or as offerings in some religious activities. Is that a flipperty-flopperty hat, and all in red; a pantomime game in jest, nocturnal at best? A scarlet pimpernel with broad chin and half the head covered in some outlandish headgear or a mangled heap of ruffled cloth may not be ideal what with the gender ambiguity. But then, on a night like this, there’s magic in the air and yes, mischief’s afoot as can be gleaned from the sly look of the figure dominating the canvas. The figure is in the open, with palms swaying in the wind. Apart from his portrait sketches in pastels, Peter Harris is known for his surrealistic bent and imaginative allegorical narratives akin to poet-artist William Blake in his major works. Peter Harris had done copious sketches of the local people when he was art superintendent in the Federation of Malaya from 1951 to December 1960. He scoured the rural areas and towns and found the ordinary people, whether at work and at rest, exotic and a fascinating study. His preferred medium was pastels, as it suited his spontaneity while brighter colours were used for the clothes or backdrops. It was a habit he repeated when teaching at the Sabah Teachers Training College (later Gaya College) from 1962-1967, in the then Jesselton (now Kota Kinabalu), though works from this phase were less available. While concentrating on the flesh tones of the faces, he usually set the headdress/shawl or clothes in brighter colours for contrast and to convey a mood of alacrity opposed to the usually laborious jobs of his subject. Here, an elderly woman in shawl with sunken cheeks and droopy eyebrows, is bedecked in a head shawl with pinkish stripes. The other is of a pug-nosed man who looks darker, despite the conical straw hat to shield himself from the sun. He has a wide grin, and is probably a farmer. In these portrait vignettes, Peter Harris strove to convey the contentment and simplicity of the rural people. Dubbed the ‘White Tiger’, Peter Harris had helped send several talented artists to study in England. But he was better known for his setting up the art coterie, Wednesday Art Group (WAG), which was active between 1952 to 1960. In 1996, Galeri Wan organised a WAG – Then and Now reunion exhibition. He was given a retrospective in October-November 1997 – his second after his 1960 Retrospective given by the National Art Gallery. In 2001, The Art Gallery Penang organised a large Tribute exhibition for him.

PETER HARRIS (b. 1923 - d. 2009), Sabah Ethnicity, 1958, Pastel and ink on paper

Sabah Ethnicity illustrates a group of Sabah women - as the title suggests - in a remarkable composition, an elderly woman adorning a chilli red fabric headdress and lemon yellow blouse stares at the viewer while three ladies are spotted in the background. Peter Harris' swift ink strokes create a balanced intensity in applying shadow and contrast. The employment of pastel softens the crudeness of lines producing an immaculate picture. Peter Harris laid the foundation of early art education in the then Malaya, first as Art superintendent of the Federation of Malaya (1951 - 1960) and then at Gaya College in Sabah (1962 - 1967). He was accorded the National Art Gallery's first retrospective in 1960. He was perhaps better known as founder of the Wednesday Art Group in Kuala Lumpur in 1952 and was awarded the MBE (Member, Order of the British Empire) by Queen Elizabeth II of England in 1963. He was largely forgotten until Galeri Wan mounted a retrospective for him in 1997 with the help of artist Yeoh Jin Leng and this was followed by another exhibition at The Art Gallery, Penang in 2001.
