JOSEPH T. HARRIS American, d. 1860 Three-quarter length portrait of gentleman slightly turned to his right with his right hand placed on his hip and his left hand holding a closed book. In the background to his right is a large window overlooking a luminous landscape, possibly the Hudson River. Signed verso "Painted by J.T. Harris (Portland). N. York Dec. 1833". Note: Harris was an active member of the National Academy of Design from 1836-1852, elected an associate in 1839. Dated 1833, the painting was executed while the artist still resided in Portland, Maine, but he likely visited New York in 1833 to complete this work.
