Paintings by Drew Harris are abstract expressions in style. They are deeply moving and are almost a spiritual experience. Although his painting portrays tranquility, they are very potent. He however, does not believe that an artist’s role is to deliver a message: “Each of us have our own lives. It is not for me to tell you how to conduct your life. I am just showing a bit of my feelings through the paintings. This painting, is as its title suggests, is a collage of interconnected theme. A flow is always present in Drew Harris’ piece. When he paints, Drew’s main concern is to have complete connection to the work. Drew doesn’t think he intentionally starts out with any high-minded artist statement but rather, it is a feeling that develops. As seen in this piece, a collage of elements and subject matters tied into one brings about unity, flow and harmony – it beckons to the viewer. The Malaysian-based Canadian studied graphic design and fine arts for six years at college and started his career as a graphic designer in Toronto. In the mid-80s, he realised that he was making more money from his paintings than graphic designs and decided to take the plunge to become a full-time artist.

Drew Harris received his formal education in design and fine arts at Georgian College of Applied Arts in Ontario Canada, 1979 – 1982, receiving the Ontario Premiere’s Award for most outstanding student of design in Ontario. Drew began his professional career in Toronto, Canada as Senior Design Director for Communique Ltd, Canada’s leading corporate communications company specialising in motivational seminars and speakers, corporate identity design and corporate video presentations. In 1991, after 6 years with Communique, Harris began his career as a full time visual artist exhibiting his abstract paintings nationally and throughout the world and in such cities as Toronto, Chicago, New York, Vancouver, Melbourne, Jakarta, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.

Drew Harris (b. 1960) Wanting, 1999

Abstract painter Drew Harris seeks consistency in his body of work. Besides depicting structural elements such as the sharp vertical line demarcating the top centre of his composition, he also incorporates multi-layers of paint to create a sense of space. Earthy tones in gradient palette of black, maroon, dark brown, yellow ochre and off-white with hints of red are applied on a rectangular format. The lighter part of the canvas is mystified with scrawls of obscure notes. Drew Harris recently spent the spring of 2018 (April to June) as artist in residence hosted by Tri-Art Manufacturing in Canada. At the end of his residency, he showcased a body of work at Art Noise Gallery in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. His work has been featured in two of Rhéni Tauchid’s books, The New Acrylics and New Acrylics Essential Sourcebook. Harris has held over 30 solo exhibitions globally since 1981. In 2013, he participated in a group exhibition alongside leading Malaysian contemporary artists Ahmad Zakii Anwar, Jalaini Abu Hassan, and Dato’ Tajuddin Ismail at The Edge Galerie in Kuala Lumpur.

In 2013, together with Tajuddin Ismail, Ahmad Zakii Anwar and Jalaini Abu Hassan they had an exhibition titled Recent Works 2013 by Drew, Jai, Tajuddin & Zakii. His latest group exhibition was in 2017 with 20 other artists like Awang Damit, Gan Tee Sheng, Khairudin Zainudin, Shafiq Nordin and many more at G13 gallery.
