TROTSKY, Leon (1879-1940) – DEWEY, John and others. Not Guilty. Report of the Commission on Inquiry into the Charges Made Against Leon Trotsky in the Moscow Trials. New York and London: Harper & Brothers, 1938. 8° (217 x 140mm). Original red wrappers printed in black (head of spine chipped); housed in a modern red morocco backed chemise and slipcase. Provenance: Leon Trotsky (presentation inscription to:) – André Breton (1896-1966; his sale, 7-17 April 2003, lot 1495). THE FINEST ASSOCIATION COPY OF THE REPORT CLAIMING LEON TROTSKY ‘NOT GUILTY’, INSCRIBED BY THE REVOLUTIONARY IN MEXICO, IN DIEGO RIVIERA'S HOUSE, TO THE ‘POPE OF SURREALISM’ ANDRÉ BRETON. The most ferocious opponent to Stalin since Lenin's death, Leon Trotsky was living in exile: ejected from power in 1925, expelled from the communist party in 1927, and eventually banished from Russia in 1929. Two years after the publication of this report, he was murdered in Mexico by an agent of Stalin. André Breton and his wife Jacqueline stayed in Mexico in Diego Rivera's house in Coyoacan from 18 April until 1 August 1938. It was there that Trotsky inscribed this copy, on 25 July 1938: ‘A mes amis Jacqueline et André Breton avec les meilleures amitiés Léon Trotsky 25 VII 1938 Coyoacan’. Breton also inserted a photograph of himself, Diego Rivera and Leon Trotsky, taken during the 1938 visit.

WEEKLY JULY, 1872--DECEMBER 28th, 1872. THE 1872 VOLUME: "On the Beach" by Homer is a nice example with ample bottom margins as is the case with with the Homer "Under the Falls". Note that many signatures are detached but the contents appear complete. All the Homers are present. The spine is perished. There is occasional soiling and foxing. Additional material includes the Ku Klux Klan, The Great Fire in Boston, etc. The 1862 volume has a rather shabby spine with crown and tail loss. One signature is detached. The three Homer plates have been excised. The remainder appears complete including the wood engravings by Theodore Davis, Charles Bush, William Jewett, etc. Much of Native American interest (see photos). SOLD WAF. Est. $175-250.

[STEWART, William Drummond (1795/6-1871), Sir]. Altowan; or, Incidents of Life and Adventure in the Rocky Mountains. By An Amateur Traveler. Edited by J. Watson Webb. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1846. 2 volumes, 8o (188 x 115 mm). (Some intermittent pale spotting.) Original red cloth, front covers with central gilt ornament of an Indian hunting a buffalo; cloth slipcase. Provenance: Frank O. Smith (gift inscription on titles, bookplates). FIRST EDITION. The work is based on Stewart's sporting trips of 1832, 1838 and 1842, though it is believed that Webb himself wrote it. Stewart came to America on pay from the British Army in 1832 and traveled west to the Rockies where he remained for several years. While in New Orleans during the winter of 1836-1837 he met A.J. Miller, a young artist whom he took with him on the return to the mountains. This fortunate meeting resulted in Miller's sketches, now in the Walters Art Gallery in Baltimore, which are among the best of the West. Howes S-991; Sabin 91392; Wagner-Camp-Becker 125. (2)
