      Lily Harmon (American, 1912-1998), "Young Woman with Bouquet of Flowers", 1943, oil on canvas laid on masonite, signed and dated lower right, 24 1/8 in. x 20 1/8 in., framed, overall 30 3/4 in. x 26 7/8 in. x 2 1/4 in. Note: Lily Harmon was born in 1912 in New Haven, Connecticut. She studied at the Yale School of Fine Arts (a branch of the university that was co-ed at the time), the Art Students League of New York and the Académie Colarossi in Paris. In 1944, she had her first solo exhibition in New York at the American Artists Gallery, which was around the time she met millionaire, Joseph Hirshhorn, whom she married in 1945 and with whom she adopted two daughters. They divorced in 1956. Harmon’s works have been exhibited at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh and the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and she has artwork in public collections such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum, and the Hirshhorn Museum. She was also an illustrator of books by notable authors such as Jean-Paul Sartre, Edith Wharton, Franz Kafka and Thomas Mann. Note: Paula Laurence was an actress and singer, who worked with the like of Orson Welles, Ethel Mermon, and Cole Porter on and off Broadway. Regionally she acted at the Westport Country Playhouse run by her husband, producer and director Charles Bowden, who produced many of Tennessee Williams’ plays.       HARMON, LILY, American, born 1912, died 1998, "First Born" (mother breast feeding her child, three studies in black and white), etching , plate mark 7 ¼"x11 ¾". pencil signed lower right, #127/250 at left, matted and framed. To quote from "Ask/Art", "born in 1912 in New Haven, she studied art at Yale School of Fine Arts in New Haven, then at Academie Colarossi in Paris and the Art Students League in New York. By the 1930's, she was working in a "Social Realist Style - - - - -". "Mrs Harmon had her first solo exhibition at the Associated American Artists Gallery inNew York in 1944. She met millionaire Joseph Hirshorn, one of the most active art collectors of his generation, in the early 40's when he visited her studio to see her paintings.
