Active/lived in California, New Jersey. Alexander Harmer is known for Indian life and landscape painting, illustration. Born in Newark, New Jersey, Alexander Harmer "is considered Southern California's first great painter of the 19th century" (Edan Hughes). He began painting as a child, and at age 13 left home and wandered to Lincoln, Nebraska, where he spent three years before joining the army in Cincinnati, Ohio. Stationed in California for two years, he got a discharge to study art at the Pennsylvania School of Fine Arts in Philadelphia with Thomas Eakins and Thomas Anshutz. In 1881, to get West to paint Indians, he re-enlisted in the Army and was assigned cavalry duty in Arizona. His expeditions against Geronimo and the Apaches earned him the title "Artist of the Apaches," and his illustrations were in Harper's Weekly. He took his field sketches and notes of the Apaches, and returned to the Pennsylvania Academy where he produced a series of oil paintings and watercolors. In the 1890s, he settled in Santa Barbara, and began painting portraits and genre scenes depicting 19th-century California during the mission era when Mexico ruled California. He married into one of the old families of the area. His adobe gallery and home on De La Guerra Plaza was a popular place for artists. 'Returning from the Rodeo'', Figures on horseback in the San Marcos Pass, signed, inscribed and dated lower left: Alex. F. Harmer / San Marcos Pass, Santa Barbara, Cal. / 1905, with the artist's Apache crossed peace pipes device, watercolor and gouache on paper under glass, sight size: 19.75'' H x 28.75'' W, est: $6000/8000. Exhibited: The Valley Club of Montecito, Santa Barbara, CA, September - December 2002. Note: Harmer's work is at once romantic and historical with a focus on capturing the vanishing life in and around the old missions during the Mexican Rule period. The present work is a strong example of this style and has great attention to detail and a dynamic composition. As with many of the artist's works, Harmer used his wife and other family members as models for the figures in this scene. Marcos Ranch extends far northward into the San Rafael backcountry and once contained over 35,000 acres purchased from Governor Pico on June 8, 1846 by Don Nicholas Den of Ranchos Dos Pueblos and his physician brother Richard. The ranch still exists today with a portion of the property renamed Rancho San Fernando Rey. The ranch was once the site of the 'Assestencia de Santa Cruz' that was one of the Royal 'kitchen' ranches operated by the Santa Barbara Mission beginning in 1804.
