RICHARD HARLFINGER (1873-1948) SECESSION PLAKAT AUSSTELLUNG. Catalogue for the exhibition. 1912. 7 3/4x7 1/4 inches, 20x18 1/2 cm. Frisch, Vienna. Condition B+: minor soiling on cover. The first International Poster exhibition organized by the Secession was held in 1912. It was comprised of works from the collections of two avid art enthusiasts: Ottokar Maschka, who wrote the preface to the catalogue, and Otto Pollak. The exhibition contained 357 posters (twenty of which are reproduced here in black and white), as well as some original studies for posters and architectural drawings. Harlfinger's design for the cover of the catalogue was also used on the poster for the exhibition. The poster and this catalogue are often misdated 1913 (the correct date is 1912). Denscher p. 54 (var), Modern Poster p. 69 (var).

Harlfinger was a member of the Secession from 1906 onwards and became the group's president in 1918. Yet there is almost no biographical information about him and within the contemporary Secession catalogues, he is listed only once, as designer of a poster for a poster exhibition in 1912, making this a very rare work. Harlfinger had certainly read Cezanne's approach to painting that became the basis of Cubism, "treat nature using the cylinder, the sphere and the cone," as this is the style he uses to create this angular vision of a city carved out of the side of a mountain.

The painting was not exhibited.
