Keith Haring Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Graffitikünstler, b. 1958 - d. 1990

Born and raised in Pennsylvania, Keith Haring developed an early fascination with art that guided his short but remarkable life. Haring loved comic artists like Charles Schultz and learned to draw from his dad, a cartoon hobbyist. In 1978, 20-year-old Haring moved to New York City. The metropolis' subway walls served as the initial canvases for Keith Haring's paintings. Indeed, commuters were the first to appreciate the dynamic lines and signature dancing men in drawings by Keith Haring.

Soon, Andy Warhol noticed Keith Haring's drawings and propelled Haring's career to new heights. Simultaneously, Haring opened a retail shop that sold posters and T-shirts of his work. The art world took exception but the public enjoyed the affordable art for sale by Keith Haring that visually defined 1980's New York. Sadly, Haring passed away in 1990 at just 31. Est: $2,000 - $4,000

Possibly Keith Haring (American, 1958-1990). Felt-tip pen drawing or doodle on a DJ album cover depicting four figures in Haring's iconic style with the word "Smokey" written below them. With a vinyl record by Zuzan titled "Girls Can Jack Too." Provenance: From the collection of Mark Kamins, a DJ in the New York club scene, 2017; Private Minnesota Collection. Lot Essay: Keith Haring, born on May 4, 1958, in Reading, Pennsylvania, emerged as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. With an innate talent for drawing, Haring's artistic journey began in the streets of New York City, where he used subway stations as his canvas, creating bold, dynamic images that captured the vibrant energy of the city. His iconic style, characterized by simple, yet powerful lines and vibrant colors, quickly garnered attention and became synonymous with the downtown art scene of the 1980s. Haring's work was more than just visually striking; it was deeply rooted in social and political activism. Inspired by his own experiences and the world around him, he used his art as a platform to address pressing issues such as AIDS awareness, apartheid, and the crack cocaine epidemic. His famous "Radiant Baby" and "Crack is Wack" murals became symbols of hope and resistance, transcending cultural boundaries and sparking important conversations about societal injustices. Mark Kamins was a prolific club DJ starting in 1977 with gigs at the Mudd Room and Danceteria. He worked in A&R for Island Records where he signed the bands The Waitresses and Was (Not Was). He was the driving force in getting his girlfriend at the time, Madonna, a record contract with Sire Records. The presently offered item comes from his 20,000+ record collection which passed from Mark to his mother upon his death and was purchased privately in 2017.

Februar 1993, Los 147, dort erworben von Privatsammlung Schweiz Tony Shafrazi Art Gallery, New York Kaiforsblom Gallery, Helsinki (label on the back board) Auction Christie's, New York, 24 February 1993, lot 147, acquired there by Private collection Switzerland Zustand / Condition In sehr guter Erhaltung In very good condition Erläuterungen / Comments Die Arbeiten von Keith Haring bestechen durch ihre klaren Linien und ihre Flächigkeit. (Off. 13, 17). Haring hinterfragte mit seinen Werken die Entwicklung der Gesellschaft und deren Auswirkung auf das Individuum. Es sind Botschaften, wie auf diesem Werk, gegen die Gewalt der Herrschenden und gegen die Barbarei. Keith Haring's works are distinguished by their clear lines and two-dimensionality. They are also characterised by their consistent two-dimensionality, cartoon-like style and strong colour contrasts. The American pop artist took some of his methods from the graffiti scene of the 1980s. His aim was to make his art understandable and accessible to everyone. The Tony Shafrazi Art Gallery in New York, through which the present work was also sold, helped him in this endeavour. Haring adopted themes such as birth, sexuality, war and death from New York street culture. The work on offer here takes up the theme of Satan, who is depicted horned in the centre of the work. The devil is regarded as the personification of evil and is also referred to in the Bible by the number "666", here in orange-red. The number is a riddle in the Bible. It comes from the last book of the New Testament, the Revelation of John, where it says: "Knowledge is needed here. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast. For it is the number of a man's name; his number is six hundred and sixty-six." (Rev 13:17). With his works, Haring scrutinised the development of society and its impact on the individual. They are messages, as in this work, against the violence of the powerful and against barbarism. KEITH HARING (Pennsylvania, 1958- New York, 1990) for New York City Skateboards, Inc. Silkscreen on wood, 1986. Skateboard. Original Pop Shop. Very exclusive specimen. It presents marks of use. Measurements: 76 x 26 cm. This is an original piece authorized by Keith Haring in 1986, not a later reproduction, as attested by the New York City Skateboards, Inc. logo. The Pop Shop opened its doors in 1986 at 292 Lafayette Street in the Soho neighborhood of Manhattan, New York. Haring saw the Pop Shop as an extension of his work, a fun boutique where his art could be available to everyone. The store sold T-shirts and novelty items with images of Keith and some of his contemporaries, such as Kenny Scharf and Jean Michel Basquiat. Later, in 1987, Haring opened a Pop Shop in Tokyo. Haring painted the interior walls of both stores, creating an immersive experience in his aesthetic. The Tokyo Pop Shop closed in 1988 and the New York Pop Shop closed in September 2005. In 2006, the exhibition Keith Haring: Art and Commerce examined the context and history of the Pop Shop, and in 2009, as part of the group exhibition Pop Life, the Tate Modern reconstructed aspects of the New York Pop Shop to recreate the feel of the original. The original Pop Shop ceiling was donated to the New-York Historical Society and is installed at its entrance. Considered the figurehead of 1980s street art, Haring's unstoppable professional career, which led him to become a Warhol colleague and media superstar, began with his work in the New York subway. The enormous popularity of Haring's urban work among the people of New York immediately caught the attention of the art establishment. Consequently, Andy Warhol adopted him into his circle, and the then emerging gallerist Tony Shafrazi organized a resounding solo exhibition for him in 1982 that was to be the launching pad for his unstoppable success. He soon exhibited his work at the gallery of the influential Leo Castelli and established himself as a professional art star. Keith Haring was an American artist whose pop art and graffiti emerged from the street culture of New York City in the 1980s. Haring's work grew in popularity thanks to his spontaneous drawings on the New York City subway in chalk on black and white advertising space backgrounds. After achieving public recognition, he created large-scale works as murals. His later work often addressed political and social issues, especially homosexuality and AIDS, through his own iconography. Today Haring's work is divided between major private and public collections, including the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Art Institute of Chicago; the Bass Museum in Miami; Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris; the Ludwig Museum in Cologne; and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. He also created a wide variety of public works, including the infirmary at Children's Village in Dobbs Ferry, New Yorkand the second-floor men's room at Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center in Manhattan, which was later transformed into an office and is known as the Keith Haring Room. In January 2019, an exhibit called "Keith Haring New York" opened at New York Law School in the main building of its Tribeca campus. It presents marks of use.
